Holiday ROAR Book Drive
The event also marks the university's annual Holiday ROAR book drive, which this year will benefit two programs: University of the Pacific's Community Involvement Program (CIP) and Reach Out And Read (ROAR).

The month-long, campus-wide book drive benefits low-income children in San Joaquin County. Students, faculty and staff are invited to contribute new children's books geared to ages 3 - 9 at the collection area in the DeRosa University Center from Nov. 9 - Dec. 10. Books in Spanish are especially needed. Join with your unit or department and donate books on topics you're passionate about!

The Community Involvement Program (CIP) was established in 1969 to provide educational opportunities to the local community and diversify the University of the Pacific campus. More than 1,500 Stockton-area students have graduated from the program since its inception. CIP students are very involved in literacy efforts throughout the year, and — dressed as super heroes — distributed 2,295 books to children at the 20th annual Record Family Day at the Park in September.

Reach Out and Read San Joaquin is a local nonprofit that works with pediatricians to distribute books to children during routine check-ups. Doctors also are trained to talk with parents about early literacy and the importance of reading with their children. ROAR is aligned with the Beyond Our Gates early literacy campaign.

Below is a list of recommended new, age-appropriate titles that reflect our region's cultural diversity.
