Farewell to Provost Philip N. Gilbertson
One bittersweet moment of spring 2010 was saying good-bye to our beloved provost, Phil Gilbertson, and his wife, Carole. Phil, who served Pacific as provost since January 1996 with wisdom and dedication, retired on June 30. Pacific is a more vibrant university, a richer and more desirable university, for having had him on our leadership team. He is responsible for bringing much of our current strong and inspired leadership aboard, and for increasing the robustness of our enrollment. He advocated for diversity and strongly supported our learning community. He also helped our University increase its reach; Phil and Carole made trips to China, Venezuela and Africa that helped to define Pacific as an international University.
We wish Phil and Carole all the best as they begin the next chapter in their lives. And though Phil is impossible to replace, we look forward to welcoming as provost a worthy successor, Dr. Maria Pallavicini, beginning February 1, 2011.
