Founded in 1851, University of the Pacific was California's first institution of higher education. Pacific's heritage and core values that created a quality student centered teaching institution then are still here today and still the driving force behind what makes the University today.

During 2010-11, University of the Pacific saw enrollment numbers climb, a record number of national, prestigious scholarships awarded and new facilities dedicated. As we celebrate the many successes of Pacific, it is clear that the core values upon which Pacific was founded 160 years ago still resonate today.

 

Record Enrollment

Freshman enrollment for fall 2011 topped 1,000 at the start of school in August, making it Pacific’s largest freshman class ever. The incoming freshman class was also one of the most academically gifted in Pacific’s history, with an average 3.49 high school GPA. Among first-year students, the most popular academic programs were biology, engineering, business and pre-pharmacy. 2011 also marked the largest class of transfer students in almost two decades at nearly 300. Total enrollment for 2010–11 was 6,717.

Record Fullbrights

Pacific students and faculty members garnered four Fulbright grants last year, the most Pacific has ever received in a single year. Joe Styers ’11 and David Allen ’11 from the School of International Studies were recipients of Fulbright Scholarships. Professors Cathy Peterson, Department of Physical Therapy in Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Robert Coburn, chair of Music Studies in the Conservatory of Music, were awarded Fulbright grants to teach and conduct research overseas.

In addition, Geology major Gabby McDaniel ’12 is the first-ever Pacific recipient of a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Given to only 275 applicants nationwide, it is one of the most prestigious scholarships for undergraduates majoring in math and science.

New Provost: Maria Pallavinci

President Pamela A. Eibeck announced the appointment of Maria G. Pallavicini as Pacific's new Provost. As Provost, Pallavicini is the University's chief academic officer with overall responsibility for Pacific's educational and research programs, library services, enrollment, financial aid, registrar and continuing education. Dr. Pallavicini holds a B.A. in biochemistry from UC Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City.

She oversees Pacific's nine schools and colleges in Stockton, San Francisco and Sacramento.



Event Highlights

Vicente Fox - Vicente Fox, former president of Mexico, was the keynote speaker at the 2011 Commencement Ceremony. Fox was the first former head of state to speak at a Pacific graduation ceremony.

Dolores Huerta - Dolores Huerta, cofounder and first vice president of the United Farm Workers, visited Pacific twice in 2010. The former Stockton resident and advocate for migrant farm workers, immigrants and the poor was the keynote speaker for Latino Heritage Month in September 2010. The following month, Huerta was presented with an honorary doctorate from the University and named one of the "Architects of Peace" by the Architects of Peace Foundation. Huerta's official portrait for the Architects of Peace project is displayed in the Wendell Phillips Center at Pacific.

John Legend: Waiting for Superman - Six-time Grammy Award winner John Legend performed at Stockton's Bob Hope Theatre following the screening of the film "Waiting for Superman." Legend composed the soundtrack for the groundbreaking documentary by David Guggenheim, which focuses on why America's public schools are failing and explores the roles charter schools and education reformers could play in offering hope.

Academic Accomplishments

Student Investment Fund - The Eberhardt School of Business Student Investment Fund (SIF) provides an outstanding ongoing experiential learning opportunity for Pacific students and gives back to the University. Ranked in the top five in fund value among student-managed funds in the West, the fully student-managed fund has grown by more than 40% since it began, outpacing the performance of the S&P 500.

Moot Court Teams - Pacific McGeorge completed its most successful moot court season in April 2011 with a second place finish in the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition national championship in Chicago. Moot court tests a student's written and oral advocacy skills in competitions representing a case on appeal.

Brubeck Institute: Downbeat Awards - Students in the Brubeck Fellowship Program won five awards in DownBeat Magazine's 34th Annual Student Music Awards competition.


Athletics Excellence

Women's Basketball: Hosts Champions - In 2010, the Pacific women's basketball team played the two-time defending national champions, University of Connecticut Huskies. Pacific's team gave the Huskies good competition before succumbing 85-42 in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 6,150. The game offered local fans the opportunity to experience a truly great basketball team and college basketball greatness. The Huskies seemed to enjoy the game as much as the crowd and signed autographs for fans.

Sports Champions: Women's Softball - Pacific's softball team captured its first conference championship, defeating Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at the Big West tournament in May 2011. The team dominated Big West postseason awards, with Head coach Brian Kolze securing Coach of the Year honors, Nikki Armagost '13 selected as Player of the Year, and Kelsey Rodriguez '14 Freshman Player of the Year. The Tigers set a conference record with seven First Team All-Conference awards, and set both Big West and Pacific all-time records for hitting.

Sports Champions: Men's Golf - The 2010-2011 men's golf team had their best season in a decade and earned an at-large bid sending them to the NCAA Tournament. Throughout the season, several players won tournaments or set records. T.J. Bordeaux '11 won the Pacific Invitational with a record of 15 under par and a final score of 198. As a team, Pacific won the three-day Pacific Invitational tournament. Alex Johnson '11 also won the Fresno State Lexus Classic in a playoff shot, and four team members earned All-Big West Conference honors.

New Facilities

McGeorge School of Law: Legal Studies Center 

Dugoni Dental School: New Campus

John T. Chambers Technology Center - The John T. Chambers Technology Center opened for classes in fall 2010. The 24,500 square-foot two-story building earned a LEED Gold certificate, the second highest level issued for sustainable buildings and the first University building to receive a gold rating.

Vereschagin Alumni House - The Alex and Jeri Vereschagin Alumni House was dedicated in Summer, 2011. The 9,500 square foot facility includes two conference rooms, an executive boardroom and business suite and is available for dinners, lectures and other functions. Located at the heart of the University, it is a repository for alumni history and accomplishments. The building was funded almost entirely by alumni including a generous $2-million lead donation by the Vereschagins.

Janet Leigh Theatre - The Pacific Theatre has been renamed the Janet Leigh Theatre, in honor of Pacific alumna Janet Leigh '47. The renaming of the theater coincides with a remodeling of the interior funded through a gift from the trust of Robert Brandt, Leigh's late husband. The lobby area displays a collection of posters, awards, photographs and other memorabilia from Leigh's life and career which the late actress bequeathed to the University's Special Collections.

Elizabeth Youngberg ’12
has made the most of her four years at University of the Pacific. A prestigious Powell Scholar, she recently spent the summer in Italy studying Italian, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity funded by a scholarship. Elizabeth has served as ASUOP vice president, a Pacific Ambassador, community service chair of the Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority, and president of the Tri Delta sorority.

Sara Ruiz ’12
In high school, Sara Ruiz studied hard with the goal of becoming the first in her family to go to college. The high school valedictorian and homecoming queen applied to Pacific and landed a scholarship. She and the university have benefitted greatly. An education major with a 3.96 GPA, Sara tutors elementary school students, and serves as the current president of the Benerd School of Education Student Association.

Stephen Lee ’12
Pacific student Stephen Lee ’12 received a prestigious Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad Program grant. Lee, a double major in the Eberhardt School of Business and College of the Pacific, received $10,000 to help pay for expenses while he was enrolled in the CIEE Study Center's Intensive Chinese Language and Culture program in Taipei.

The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education to support U.S. students studying overseas, is designed to promote diplomacy and cultural awareness through international education.

Michael Crook ’12
It’s a long way from the mean streets of Sacramento’s Del Paso Heights to Pacific McGeorge School of Law. But scholarship student Michael Crook has made that journey. Michael, a 40-year-old night law school student, is secretary of the Black Law Student Association at McGeorge. When he graduates in 2013, Michael hopes to work as a sports lawyer, perhaps as a university compliance officer. He also plans on becoming a McGeorge donor himself to help talented students of limited means.

Ken Albala, Ph.D
Who knew the history of food could be so engaging? Dr. Ken Albala brings his research and cooking techniques to the classroom by way of cooking demonstrations.

Albala, professor of History, is the author or editor of 14 books on food including Eating Right in the Renaissance and Beans: A History(winner of the 2008 International Association of Culinary Professionals Jane Grigson Award). He has written a textbook entitled Three World Cuisines: Italy, China, Mexico which will be published in the spring of 2012.

Robert Coburn, Ph.D
chair of Music Studies in the Conservatory of Music, was awarded a Fulbright grant to teach and conduct research at Tokyo National University of the Arts in Japan, where he will be affiliated with the Intermedia Department and will pursue creative research composing interactive performance works for traditional Japanese instruments, computer music, and video.

Frank Gevurtz, JD
distinguished professor, scholar and professor of law has been teaching at Pacific McGeorge for 30 years. Gevurtz has written and edited an innovative multi-volume Global Issues Casebook Series published by West and used in law schools nationwide. He is frequently cited by other scholars and courts and also serves as director of Pacific McGeorge Global Center for Business and Development.

Courtney Lehmann, Ph.D
From her involvement as the director of the Humanities Center to her role as a faculty advisor for Calliope-the University's award-winning student literary magazine-Dr. Lehmann has used her spirit and passion to motivate students to new levels of thinking at Pacific since 1998. Lehmann is widely known as an expert in Shakespeare and has written papers and books and made presentations throughout the world. She understands the importance of scholarship in the humanities and of stretching one's mind to new horizons.

Cathy Peterson, PT, Ed.D
Professor Cathy Peterson, Department of Physical Therapy in Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was awarded a Fulbright grant to teach and conduct research overseas. Peterson is teaching at the Malawi College of Medicine and will research neurodegenerative diseases in Africa. The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. government's flagship international exchange program.

James Jewell '51
In the world of technical lighting, James Jewell '51 is among the best, having worked on the Golden Gate Bridge, Hearst Castle and Tower Bridge in Sacramento. He credits his time as a drama major at University of the Pacific with giving him the discipline, confidence and creativity to shine. Through James' generous estate gift to the Theater Arts Department for students to study technical lighting, he is making it possible for future generations of Pacific students to make their dreams come true.

Ron Redmond, DDS '66
Dr. Ronald Redmond, Dugoni School of Dentistry, is as committed to University of the Pacific as he is to dentistry. A world-class orthodontist who has lectured internationally, Dr. Redmond has established several successful orthodontic practices in Southern California and Washington. While chair of Pacific Dugoni'sCommitment to Excellence Campaign, he successfully completed a nearly $66-million fundraising initiative. Recently, Dr. Redmond, who is also a Pacific Regent, and his wife, Margaret, made a lead gift for Dugoni's future downtown San Francisco dental facility.

Bonnie Morehead, DDS '76 & '79
As an undergraduate in biological sciences and later as a dental student at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, Bonnie Morehead '76, '79 has distinguished herself academically and on campus, participating in Greek life, talent shows and intramural sports. Since then, the successful dentist has sent her two daughters to Pacific and generously supported her alma mater. In 2004, Bonnie established an endowed technology fund to honor her late father and benefit today's students.

Community Engagement

University of the Pacific continued to strengthen its partnerships at the local and regional level with programs that extend into the community through President Pamela A. Eibeck's "Beyond Our Gates" initiatives. Through one of the initiatives, "The Tomorrow Project," multiple academies geared to increase high school completion rates and improve college readiness were launched or strengthened. Here, we share some of the highlights.

 

Harmony Stockton

Harmony Stockton

Taking inspiration from Venezuela's highlight successful El Sistema, a national system of youth orchestras, Harmony Stockton provides music education for underprivileged and at-risk children to help them improve academic performance and build self-esteem and community pride. Harmony Stockton launched at Marshall Elementary School with 50 to 75 students in grades 3 through 5 and runs through the school year. The program is operated by the Stockton Symphony, Pacific's Conservatory of Music and the Benerd School of Education; and is funded by the United Way, the Stockton Symphony and private donations.

Reach for the Stars

Reach for the Stars

University of the Pacific's Tomorrow Project was launched as the centerpiece of President's Beyond Our Gates initiative. The Tomorrow Project focuses on increasing K-12 students' college readiness and on ways to close the educational opportunity gaps that have historically existed in Stockton.

Reach for the Stars, one of the Tomorrow Project academies, prepares promising young students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related careers. The academy is modeled on the successful 32-year-old TexPrep program, which has educated more than 28,000 students in 17 Texas cities and contributed to extraordinary high school graduation and college enrollment rates.

Pacific Law-Themed High School

Teen Law

Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep (NP3), an educational pipeline school and partner with University of the Pacific, was honored as a 2011 California Distinguished School. NP3 was one of only two high schools in Sacramento County eligible for the award, and the only one to receive it.

NP3 was created in partnership with University of the Pacific Benerd School of Education and Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 2006 as a law-themed public charter school. Pacific students from McGeorge and the Pacific Legal Scholars Program serve as mentors.

Kennedy Center Theatre Comes to Pacific

Kennedy Center Theater Comes to Pacific

More than 6,000 San Joaquin County school children attended free performances of the Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences on Tour's presentation of "Barrio Grrrl!" in 2011.

Former Regent Dea Berberian and her husband Ron Berberian '65 have partnered with the University to bring the world class performing arts productions to Stockton to entertain and educate local schoolchildren since 2002, reaching more than 24,000 children. University of the Pacific is the only school in the nation that offers performances to local schools for free.

SUCCESS Progam Receives Grant

SUCCESS

Pacific was privileged to receive a $1.47 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the Student Support Services (SSS) TRIO program on the Stockton campus during the 2010-2011 school year. The grant is designed to increase retention and graduation rates among first generation, low income students or students with disabilities. It provides for tutoring, academic, financial and personal counseling as well as assistance in applying for admission and financial aid for graduate and professional schools.

Osher Lifetime Learning Institute

Lifelong Learning

The Bernard Osher Foundation awarded Pacific a $1 million endowment, to provide ongoing funding for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI@Pacific) programs. Pacific was one of only 18 universities invited to apply for the endowment.

At Pacific, adults over 50 have the opportunity to explore a variety of the Institute's educational enrichment activities. Offered through the Center for Professional and Continuing Education, participants can engage in programs, guest lectures and excursions. Since its inception in 1997, participation has grown from about 70 to more than 500 people per year.

Pacific Takes Lead on Delta Plan

Delta

Pacific will lead a team of distinguished economists, planners and engineers in developing an Economic Sustainability Plan for the Delta Protection Commission. Pacific's Business Forecasting Center will lead the research and development, assisted by Pacific's Natural Resources Institute and the Jacoby Center to review the potential impact of proposed Delta plans on agriculture, recreation, local governments and other aspects of the Delta economy to develop recommendations for flood control, public safety and the sustainability of the Delta's legacy communities. The one-year agreement has a maximum award of $1,162,500.
