Health Sciences Librarian

The University of the Pacific seeks a Health Sciences Librarian with energy, initiative, and vision to provide effective leadership and direction in the provision of library resources and services. The librarian's role in the academy is changing, and that change is particularly apparent in the sciences. The Health Sciences Librarian takes a leadership role in the development of relationships between the University Library and faculty in School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, other natural and physical sciences departments (to be determined), as well as the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry, located in San Francisco. The Health Sciences Librarian develops productive partnerships with faculty for the development of programs, services, and collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and deliver a range of innovative library services that facilitate the curricular and research needs of students and faculty in the health sciences, including chemistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, dentistry and dental hygiene as well as other related disciplines;
  • Provides reference assistance, instruction, and outreach services in assigned subject areas and in support of the Library's programs;
  • Directs the programs and staff of the Health Sciences Branch Library located in the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (2FTE staff; 1.25FTE student assistants);
  • Cultivates collaborative relationships with teaching faculty in relevant subject areas;
  • Employs new technologies in pursuit of teaching and learning that extends library/information guidance and research assistance beyond the physical building;
  • Assists in achieving and assessing the library's information competency goals;
  • Selects print and electronic resources in support of curriculum and research in relevant subject areas;
  • Collaborates and actively participates in local, regional, national, or international organizations regarding related issues;
  • Serves on/participates in University and Library committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate;
  • Engages in scholarly/creative/professional activity as appropriate;
  • Actively maintains current knowledge and expertise in information trends in the health, natural, and physical sciences;
  • Some evening and weekend work is required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information science;
  • Academic degree in chemistry or the natural sciences, or demonstrated equivalent gained through experience in an academic health sciences or science library;
  • Successful experience delivering education, information, and research services in an academic or research library;
  • Successful experience in collection development including the evaluation and selection of content in print and electronic formats;
  • Passion for quality library service centered around student learning and characterized by collaboration with faculty in support of teaching and research needs;
  • Commitment to providing high-quality public service within a flexible and continually evolving academic library environment;
  • Demonstrated experience with mobile devices, social networking, and other new technology applications and their use and potential for the delivery of library resources and services;
  • Ability to manage time and multiple projects in a changing environment with a positive, flexible, creative, and innovative attitude;
  • Demonstrated creative approaches to problem solving;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and to foster teamwork;
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a multicultural setting and a deep commitment to supporting and promoting diversity.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • Salary from $50,000, negotiable depending upon experience;
  • Faculty rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, non-tenure track, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Twenty-four days vacation, 15 holidays/seasonal days; excellent support for professional development; TIAA-CREF retirement; tuition remission; and other generous benefits.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The University of the Pacific is an independent coeducational institution with 6400 students and 440 full-time instructional faculty, with campuses in Stockton, San Francisco, and Sacramento.
