Article 1 Preamble

The University of the Pacific Faculty is a community of teacher-scholars acting within the University's system of shared governance as established in the University of the Pacific Policy Statement on Governance adopted by the Board of Regents on September 12, 1996.

The University Faculty has authority and responsibility for the design and conduct of educational programs and courses of instruction of the University as specified in that Policy.

The governance system provides for the exercise of the University Faculty's primary role in academic decisions, its participatory role in joint decisions, and its advisory role on other general University matters.

Because a University is a complex entity, the tasks of governance must be apportioned and delegated, but the interdependence of administration, faculty and Board of Regents is the basic premise of legitimate and effective governance.

This document establishes the framework for faculty participation in the shared governance system of the University of the Pacific.
