Minutes of December 7, 2006

Present: Nathan Batto, Susan Giraldez, Michael Golanbari, Fred Muskal, Newman Peery, Jean Purnell, Edie Sparks, Tom Rajala, Meghan Mullen, Cecilia Rodriguez, Christine Wilson

Absent: Michael Sokol, Ken Day

Guests: Lou Matz, Caroline Cox, Lydia Fox

Newman Peery called the meeting to order at 3:05 pm.

I.

Approval of Minutes
Motion: Nathan Batto moved, Michael Golanbari seconded to approve the November 2, 2006 minutes.
Motion passed with one abstention.

 

II.

Consent Agenda
Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Christine Wilson seconded to approve the Consent Agenda.
Fred Muskal made a friendly amendment to include PCSP 246 Special Topics in Advanced Biochemistry in the approval contingent upon receiving the syllabus reflecting the change from addition to revision, Christine Wilson accepted the friendly amendment.
Motion unanimously approved.
 

III.

Restructuring of Research and Graduate Studies Office
Newman Peery circulated copies of the memos relating to the restructuring of the Research and Graduate Studies Office. N. Peery had requested at the last meeting that committee members write to him on what their unit thought about the restructuring. N. Peery also met with Dean Beck, Fred Muskal, Robin Grace Jennings (Admissions) and Connie Henderson (Graduate School) to have a better understanding of the restructuring and the graduate application process through the Graduate School. The action before the committee today is whether to approve the restructuring the office as described in the proposal.

Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Susan Giraldez seconded to approve the recommended changes of the Research and Graduate Studies Office, including following the Business School model.

Tom Rajala responded to comments. A process is in place for when a graduate inquiry or graduation application is received so there is a quick response.
Motion to adopt the proposal outlined by the Provost was approved with two abstentions.

 

IV.

2007-2008 Academic Calendar
The Pharmacy date changes have been made to the academic calendar. Barbara Shaw will address concerns regarding the summer session dates for the next academic calendar. It was mentioned that consideration should be focused on changing the summer sessions for one summer.
Motion: Christine Wilson moved, Fred Muskal seconded to approve the 2007-2008 academic calendar.

Christine Wilson made a friendly amendment to approve the 2007-2008 academic calendar while recognizing grave concerns with the late beginning fall semester and the matter of a shift in the summer sessions, Fred Muskal approved.
Motion unanimously approved.

 

V.

Proposal to Change Graduation Filing Dates
Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Susan Giraldez seconded to approve the adoption of a policy to formulate separate graduation filing dates for summer, fall, and spring.
Motion unanimously approved.

 

VI.

Supplemental Agenda

Geosciences
Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Michael Golanbari seconded to approve the modifications of the Geosciences courses.
Motion unanimously approved.

History
Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Michael Golanbari seconded to approve the modifications to the History courses.

Fred Muskal made a friendly amendment to approve the courses contingent upon revision of the course description for HIST 063 History of Science and Technology for the general catalog, Michael Golanbari approved.
Motion unanimously approved.

Modern Language and Literature
Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Michael Golanbari seconded to approve the courses submitted by Modern Language and Literature.
Motion unanimously approved.

Political Science
Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Nathan Batto seconded to approve POLI 134 American Political Thought submitted by Political Science.
Motion unanimously approved.

Motion: Susan Giraldez moved, Fred Muskal seconded to approve revision of the Political Science Pre-Law Program.
Motion unanimously approved.


Religious and Classical Studies
Motion: Nathan Batto moved, Fred Muskal seconded to approve addition of RELI 124 Ancient Judaism.
Motion approved.

Ethnic Studies
Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Nathan Batto seconded to approve the changes to the Ethnic Studies Minor.
Motion unanimously approved.

HONR 197 Undergraduate Research
Motion: Fred Muskal moved, Nathan Batto seconded to approve the Honor course.
Motion unanimously approved.
