Minutes of November 6, 2003

Chair Bob Cox called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m.

I.        Approval of Minutes

October 2, 2003

           Motion: Lisa Nowinski moved, Vivian Snyder seconded to approve the minutes.
           Motion unanimously approved.

II.      Consent Agenda

Professors West and Wolfe were available for questions on the MTHR upgrade and updating course titles on the agenda.          
Motion: Ash Brown moved, Robert Coburn seconded to approve the consent agenda.
          
Motion unanimously approved.
     

    

III.     Program Review

1.Information was made available to the Classics panel after the report was submitted. The panel has been asked to consider some revisions.  The panel report will be addressed at the December meeting.

2. Dale McNeal, Biology, agreed to serve on the panel for the School of Education.

Motion: Lisa Nowinsky moved, Ash Brown seconded to add Dale McNeal to the Program Review panel for the School of Education.

Motion unanimously approved.


IV.    Grade Replacement Policy
          
The Assistant/Associate Deans group has proposed revisions to the University's

grade replacement policy. The policy only applies to undergraduates.  This policy change will not affect the current policy on grade averaging for first professional and graduate students.

1. Students can repeat a course for grade replacement if they have received a C- or lower the first time they took the class.

           2. Any given course can be repeated one time only, whether for grade replacement or

grade averaging.   Basic skills courses are exempt from the one repeat rule.

3. The last grade received is the grade that will be calculated into the GPA.

4. Students may exercise their grade replacement rights up to a maximum of three times while at Pacific. Basic Skills are exempt from the three times rule.

5. The current grade averaging policy would remain unchanged for courses in which a student has received a grade of a C or above.  Grade averaging would also be available to students who have "used" their three grade replacements and wish to retake another coure or courses for which they have received a C- or below. 

6. In any course or program where enrollment demand exceeds the resources to offer sufficient openings or sections to meet that demand, the academic unit may give registration priority to students taking the course for the first time.

           Motion: Eric Typpo moved, Chris Goff seconded to adopt the proposed changes

in the University grade replacement policy with amendments to Items 2 and 4, shown above in bold.

Motion unanimously approved.
The Chair will write a memo to Academic Council endorsing the proposed changes in the University grade replacement policy and recommending a two-year grandfathering period (that is, implement fully by Fall 2006).

          Motion unanimously approved.
