Canvas

What is Canvas?

Canvas is a Learning Management System that enables faculty to offer educational opportunities to their students beyond the traditional classroom.  Through tools such as online assignment submission, discussion boards, and wiki pages, students can continue their education and interaction beyond the scheduled class meeting time.

Canvas allows faculty to:

  • Host web conferences
  • Moderate class discussions
  • Receive and organize student submissions
  • Organize grades
  • Provide additional content to students

Canvas allows students to:

  • Interact with fellow students through discussion boards
  • Form groups to share information, files, and collaborate to complete projects
  • Message fellow students in their courses via the Canvas inbox
  • Submit quizzes and assignments to their instructors
  • Organize their academic and personal life using the Canvas Calendar
  • Build an academic portfolio for use in applications and courses

In addition, Canvas can provide a collaboration space for groups that include student members.  Using Canvas, faculty or staff can organize materials, host discussions, and do other administrative tasks.
