The Brubeck Institute
Transforming Lives Through Music and Education
"Thank you for your patriotism and your leadership in representing America by introducing the language, the sounds and the spirit of jazz to new generations around the world." - Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice
Jazz great, civil rights activist and University of the Pacific alumnus Dave Brubeck embodies much that is special about Pacific.
For more than a half century, Brubeck has delighted audiences and critics around the world with his singular style that employs unusual time signatures and superimposes contrasting rhythms, tonalities and meters. In 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet released "Time Out," a bold experiment in time signatures that sold more than a million copies and spawned the hits "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five."
When asked how he would like to be remembered, Dave Brubeck - recipient of the National Medal of Arts and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award - responded: "As someone who opened doors." The Brubeck Institute does just that.
The institute builds on Brubeck's lifelong commitment to music, creativity, education, and the advancement of important social issues. For more than a decade, it has trained tomorrow's jazz virtuosos, provided scholars with access to Brubeck's personal and business papers, and, through performance, brought Brubeck's transcendent music to San Joaquin residents and beyond. The institute achieves its objectives through its five core programs: The Brubeck Festival, The Brubeck Collection, The Brubeck Fellowship Program, The Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony and The Brubeck Outreach Program.
