Pacific Baseball: Tigers Drop Only Game Of UC Riverside Series, 5-3 In 11 Innings
After earning head coach Ed Sprague's 150th career victory earlier on the day, the Pacific baseball team dropped Game 2 of the doubleheader against UC Riverside and fell 5-3 in 11 inning on Saturday, April 10.
With the loss Pacific dropped to 19-11 on the year and 3-3 in Big West action while UC Riverside improved to 15-11 and 3-3 in conference after claiming its only win of the series.
For the first time of the series the Tigers struck first in the contest, plating two early runs against the Highlanders in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Ben Gorang (Turlock, Calif.) led off the inning with a five-pitch walk and quickly moved into scoring position during senior Joe Oliveira's (San Diego, Calif.) plate appearance. Oliveira landed the first pitch he saw down the third base line for a sacrifice bunt to put Gorang in scoring position. Then junior Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) had enough patience at the plate to garner him a free pass via a full-count walk, putting runners at first and second base. It was up to junior Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) who drove in the first run for Pacific after singling a 2-2 pitch into left field, moving Longmire over to third and scoring Gorang from second base. Pacific jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with Martin's hit. Senior Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) continued the rally into the next at-bat, taking his second pitch deep into left center field to move Martin up one bag and score Longmire from third for the 2-0 lead in the third inning.
UC Riverside came back with one run in the top of the seventh and one more in the top of the eighth frame as Pacific kept the 3-2 lead for its starter, RHP Jake Hummel (Peoria, Ariz.). After going to the bullpen, neither team could come up with anything offensively as a scoreless ninth inning pushed the game into extra innings.
Into the 11th inning UC Riverside came from behind with three runs for a 5-2 lead. Pacific tried to rally in the bottom of the frame.
Backed against a wall and trailing by three, Martin singled to left field to kick off the offensive push with one out in the inning. Walked followed that up with another single through the right side and advanced Martin into scoring position at third base. Junior J.B. Brown (Alvin, Texas) came in to bring home the only run of the 11th with a single to left center that brought home Martin and moved Pacific closer, 5-3, before the game's final outs.
RHP Robbie Richardson (Lodi, Calif.) suffered the loss for the Tigers and fell to 1-2 on the season. RHP Mitch Patito earned his first victory on the hill in 2010 and is now 1-0, while RHP Mike Wolford garnered his fourth save of the year. Offensively, Walker and Brown led the Tigers each going 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI.
The Tigers next return to action on Tuesday, April 13 when they take on Sacramento State for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
