Pacific Baseball Closes Out Road Swing With 9-3 Loss At Santa Clara

Apr 6, 2010
All it took was two early runs to get into Pacific's bullpen and hand the Tigers the 9-3 loss at Santa Clara on Tuesday, April 6. With the loss Pacific fell to 17-10 on the season while the Broncos improved to 13-14 overall.

Santa Clara came out firing against RHP John Prato Matthews (Davis, Calif.) after Pacific went scoreless in the top of the first inning. The Broncos plated two unearned runs to take a quick 2-0 lead.

Pacific then was forced to play catch-up and one inning later, a solo homerun from junior J.B. Brown (Alvin, Texas) led off the second inning by scoring the Tigers' only run. Pacific then trailed 2-1.

The bullpen then struggled to keep Santa Clara down in the bottom of the fourth, after both teams swapped two back-and-forth scoreless frames. The inning culminated when Santa Clara plated four runs to speed out to a 6-1 lead after four. The Tigers then tried to come back in the top of the sixth frame.

Sophomore Brett Christopher (Livermore, Calif.) led off the inning with a single up the middle, driving the first pitch he saw into center field. That was followed up by junior Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) who recorded the inning's second single to third base and moved Christopher into scoring position at second. One out later Brown kept the rally going when he blooped a 3-1 pitch into left field to load the bases. Next up, freshman John Haberman (Stockton, Calif.) contributed his first RBI on the contest when he launched a sacrifice fly into center for the second out of the inning, while also scoring Christopher to cut the lead down to 6-2.

Senior RHP Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.) kept the Broncos scoreless in the bottom portion of the sixth, as the Tigers came back and plated another run in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore Allen Riley (Fresno, Calif.) singled to shortstop to kick off the inning. One out later, senior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) remained patient amidst a full-count to earn the walk and put runners at first and second base. Christopher then reached on a fielder's choice to first that eliminated Oliveira at second, all the while allowing Riley to score Pacific's third run as the Tigers trailed 6-3.

But that was it for Pacific, as Santa Clara sent home one more run in the bottom of the seventh, taking a 7-3 lead. They sealed the victory with a pair of runs in the eighth for the final 9-3 decision.

Prato Matthews took the loss on the hill and fell to 0-2 on the year. Simon Brock earned the victory for the Broncos and improved to 1-0 in 2010. Offensively, Martin led the Tigers going 3-for-5, after starting out a perfect 3-for-3 throughout the first half of the game.

The Tigers return home for the Big West Conference home opener against UC Riverside. The three-game series kicks off on Friday, April 9, with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
