Pacific Baseball: Senior RHP Hunter Carnevale Earns Big West Pitcher of the Week
Senior Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.) pitched 11 scoreless innings on the week against Sacramento State and No. 25 UC Irvine and for his efforts was voted by the conference as the Big West Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 18.
Carnevale picked up the win in both games out of the bullpen, coming in with Pacific trailing 4-3 against UC Irvine on Saturday, April 17, and with the score knotted up at 2-2 against the Hornets on Tuesday, April 13. He has now made five-straight appearances without allowing a single earned run across the plate.
On Tuesday against Sacramento State, Carnevale entered in a 2-2 tie and shut down Sacramento State, allowing just four baserunners (three hits and a walk), while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work, leading the Tigers to a 5-2 victory. Against No. 25 UC Irvine, Carnevale came into the game with the Tigers trailing by one and kept the Anteaters scoreless through 5.2 innings of relief. Hunter helped Pacific snap a five-game losing streak dating back to the past three years with the Anteaters and helped the Tigers claim their first series victory over UC Irvine since May of 2005.
After this week, Carnevale was able to drop his ERA down to a team-leading 3.11, with a spectacular 1.74 ERA in Big West Conference action.
Carnevale is the first pitcher to win the nod this season and is the second Tiger to gain a Big West Athlete of the Week award as freshman John Haberman (Stockton, Calif.) was named Player of the Week on March 28.
