Pacific Women's Soccer Opens Spring Play In Winning Fashion

Apr 12, 2010

The Pacific women's soccer team opened its spring season in winning fashion by taking down Chico State 3-0 and Sacramento State 2-1 in a four-team tournament at Stagg Stadium on Saturday, April 10.

Against Chico State, the first goal of the contest was netted in by the 2009 Big West Midfielder of the year, sophomore Angelica Figueroa (Linden, Calif.). Then freshman Laura Hernandez (Seattle, Wash.) had a hand in the other two Tiger goals as her corner kick found its way into the back of the net and gave Pacific a 2-0 lead. The Tigers sealed the shutout victory when freshman Kayla Villalpando (San Jose, Calif.) received a corner kick from Hernandez and scored the third goal of the game.

"I was very pleased with our play today, we were in control of both games and were able to look at our spring team in many different situations," said head coach Keith Coleman. "We knocked the ball around very well and had a number of quality scoring chances against a very athletic Chico State team and our defense was calm and focused all afternoon."

Against Sacramento State, who Pacific tied in a double overtime contest during the fall season, Pacific emerged victoriously after a 2-1 decision. Sophomore Kristina Wavomba (Encinitas, Calif.) led the way for the Tigers' win netting both of Pacific's goals off corner kicks from Hernandez for the assist. Wavomba played strong in the contest and her finishes ensured the Tigers' second win of the day in their spring debut.

"The team is training hard in all aspects and all of our players are focused on improving their games. They are working hard and having fun," Coleman said. "That really showed in their overall performance last weekend."

In the other games UC Davis defeated Sacramento State 1-0 and lost to Chico State 0-2.

Pacific will continue its spring play this weekend when they head to Cal State Stainslaus and then return home on Sunday, April 25, taking on the California Storm at 2 p.m. at Knoles Field.
