Pacific Softball: Pair of Homeruns Lift Tigers Over Aggies, Pacific Splits Doubleheader With UC Davis
A pair of homeruns lifted the Tigers over UC Davis, 2-1, in the first of two scheduled games at Bill Simoni Field. Pacific spilt the doubleheader with the Aggies falling 2-1 in the second game on Saturday, April 10. With the split Pacific's record improved to 15-20 (3-2 Big West) while the Aggies fell to 14-22 (3-2 Big West).
In game one of a doubleheader, freshman Nikki Armagost (Andover, Kan.) gave up four hits while striking out five batters through seven innings of work.
After throwing eight pitching in the first inning to send down the top of the Aggie line up, Sarah Axelson of UC Davis hit a solo homerun off Armagost to straight away center to give the Aggies the 1-0 lead. After giving up the solo shot, Armagost threw three pitches to induce Alex Holmes to fly out to right field before giving up a second hit to the Aggies. The Aggies ended the inning on a popup to Megan Allen (Yucaipa, Calif.) while picking up one run on two hits.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, senior Karie Wilson (Glendale, Ariz.) put the Tigers on the board with a solo shot over the right field fence. Stepping into the box after Wilson, Armagost reached based on an error by Sarah Axelson of UC Davis. However Pacific's next three batters were sent down in order, stranding Armagost at first.
With the game tied at one all in the bottom of the sixth Allen sent the second pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence to put the Tigers up 2-1.
In the second game of the afternoon Shaina Brock (Derby,Kans.) worked seven inning while giving up two runs and four hits. With the game scoreless entering the top of the fourth inning, the Aggies started the inning with a single up the middle from Jessica Gonzalez. Gonzalez then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Elizabeth Santana before reaching home on a double from Sarah Axelson. Axelson then reached third base on a ground by Alex Homles. With a 1-0 count on the batter, Brock was called for an illegal pitch with allowed Axelson to reach home, giving the Aggies the 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, freshman Amy Moore (Valencia, Calif.) stepped up to the plate and hit a double down the right field line to give the Tigers a runner in scoring position. Pinch running for Moore at second base, Robin Nelson(Morgan, Hill) reached home on an RBI single from Alexa Rivera(Sacramento, Calif.) to give the Tigers their first run of the game. Rivera then advanced to second on the throw to home but the Tigers were unable to produce a hit to bring Rivera home from second.
Pacific's contest against the Aggies which was scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, has been postponed due to impending rain. The contest will be rescheduled for a later date which will be determined this week.
