Pacific Men's Tennis: Pacific Overwhelms Highlanders With 7-0 Sweep on Senior Day
There is no denying that the Pacific mens tennis team is on a roll as it creeps closer to the Big West Conference Tournament. The Tigers won all nine matches against UC Riverside Sunday morning en route to their second straight 7-0 victory over a conference opponent in two days. Pacific has now won four straight matches and is 9-10 overall with 3-2 record against Big West opponents.
It was a real team effort, said Head Coach Matt Lucas. Everyone played a part in the win today. I feel like we are peaking at the right time and thats what you do as a team. You want to peak heading into the conference tournament.
It was senior day on the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts and seniors Renan Delsin (Santa Cruz da Conceicao, Brazil), Vegerd Veskimagi (Saku, Estonia) and Chase Oliphant (Indio, Calif.) brought the much needed spark at the bottom of the singles lineup for Pacific to pull off its impressive win, collectively defeating their opponents by an average of 6-2 each set.
They contributed a lot to this program, added Lucas. Weve had quite a bit of success here in the last year and half and they have been a big part of that. I just hope we can send them out with a conference championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament.
In the top two positions, junior Artem Gramma (Kriovj Roj, Ukraine) and sophomore Ivan Castro (Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil) have now won four straight matches at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. Gramma defeated Quoc Doan (6-2, 6-1) to improve to an 11-7 record this spring, while Castro defeated John Park (6-2, 6-0) to improve to 13-6.
Junior Fernando Ristow (Curitiba, Brazil) continued a streak of his own. By defeating Austin Andres 7-5, 6-1, he has now won three straight singles matches.
Pacific will be heading to Reno next week in a makeup match against Nevada. Match time is set for 9 a.m. on April 24 and will be the Tigers final regular season match in 2010.
