Women's Water Polo: No. 16 Pacific Takes Down No. 12 UC Santa Barbara To Claim Big West Regular Season Title

With the Big West regular season title on the line, Pacific's women's water polo team defeated No. 12 UC Santa Barbara 13-9 to finish the year as the 2010 Big West regular season champions. With the win the Tigers improved to 22-9 (4-1 Big West) while the Gauchos fell to 17-10 (3-2 Big West).

In the first quarter junior Mandy King (Benicia, Calif.) found the back of the net at the 7:41 spot to put the Tigers up 1-0 but the Gauchos responded at the 5:43 mark to tie the game at one goal apiece. Freshman Brooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) kept the game tied at one all when she blocked a five meter penalty shot from UC Santa Barbara's Elle Quane at the 2:50 point. Pacific then regained the one point advantage with 0:33 remaining in the quarter when junior Siobhan Larsen (Mundelein, Ill.) scored on a follow up shot after a shot from freshman Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand) deflected off the crossbar.

Myles then helped the Tigers expand their lead to two at the 7:03 mark in the second quarter but UC Santa Barbara's Christie Clark scored a goal 15 seconds later to keep the Gauchos within one of Pacific. Sophomore Katherine Biehle (Visalia, Calif.) notched her first goal of the contest on a fast break at the 5:31 mark to make it a 4-2 Pacific lead, however UC Santa Barbara responded again with a goal at the 3:38 point. The Tigers then took the 5-3 lead when Geck notched her second goal of the contest with 2:23 remaining in the half, but UC Santa Barbara remained within one of the Tigers when they found the back of the net 17 seconds later. Geck completed the hat trick at the 1:45 point making it a 6-4 game to end the half.

The Gauchos kicked off the third quarter tallying a goal at the 4:27 spot to cut Pacific's lead to one but junior Dara Tawarahara(Honolulu, Hawai'i) helped the Tigers regain the two point advantage 18 seconds later. UC Santa Barbara then notched back-to-back goals at the 3:34 and 2:54 points to tie the game at seven all. With the game tied at seven goals apiece Geck andCatherine Collett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) tallied consecutive goals at the 2:26 and 1:40 spots respectively to give Pacific the 9-7 lead to end the third.

In the final frame UC Santa Barbara's Michelle Beaudreau found the back of the net at the 6:57 spot to put the Gauchos within one of the Tigers. But junior Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) and Tawarahara scored goals with 6:36 and 5:47 remaining on the clock respectively to expand Pacific's lead to two. With 3:24 left in the regulation the Gauchos scored their ninth goal of the game but Pacific countered at the 1:48 and 0:19 spots on goals from Quertermous and Tawarahara respectively for a 13-9 final score.

Juniors Bridget Geck (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) tallied three goals apiece in the contest while freshman Brooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) had 10 saves in the cage for Pacific.

With wins over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara and No. 10 Cal State Northridge, Pacific won it's first Big West title in program history. The Tigers will enter the 2010 Big West Tournament, which will be hosted by Long Beach State April 23-25, as the No. 1 seed.
