Pacific Women's Water Polo: No. 16 Pacific Finishes Day 2-0, Tops Fresno-Pacific 16-8
In the first quarter the Tiger defense held the Sunbirds scoreless while junior Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored Pacific's lone goal at the 2:55 mark to make it a 1-0 contest.
At the start of the second quarter Pacific expanded its lead by two when Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) found the back of the net with 4:31 on the clock however Fresno-Pacific took the 3-2 lead on three consecutive goals at the 3:56, 3:09 and 2:23 spots. Freshman Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand) tied the game at three goals apiece with 2:11 on the clock and was followed up with a goal from sophomore Katherine Biehle (Visalia, Calif.) at the 1:56 mark to give the Tigers the 4-3 lead. Myles struck again with :20 remaining in regulation, putting Pacific up 5-3 entering the half.
The Tigers took the 7-3 at the start of the third quarter on back-to-back goals from juniorAllison King (Benicia, Calif.) and Biehle at the 5:48 and 3:18 points respectively. But 33 seconds later Nicolette Haley of Fresno-Pacific cut Pacific's lead to three however Myles completed the hat trick at the 2:10 spot to help the Tigers regain the four point advantage. Pacific then closed out the quarter with the 10-4 lead on consecutive goals from Tawarahara.With 7:09 remaining in the final frame Pacific's lead was cut in half on a goal from Fresno-Pacific's Katie Bayner and was followed with a goal from teammate Borbala Toth at the 6:20 spot to make it a 10-6 game. Junior Siobhan Larsen (Mendelein, Ill.) found the back of the net 16 seconds later for the first time in the contest to give the Tigers the five point advantage. Fresno-Pacific notched its seventh goal of the game at the 5:17 mark but Biehle and freshman Brittany Maag(Orange, Calif.) tallied back-to-back goals at the 4:00 and 3:22 spots correspondingly to put Pacific up 13-7. With 2:50 remaining in the contest the Sunbirds scored a goal, cutting the Tiger lead to five but Pacific regained the six point advantage when freshman Nicole Vasco (Dana Point, Calif.) notched a goal one minute later. The Tigers closed out the contest with uninterrupted goals from sophomore Brittany Lloyd (Orinda, Calif.) and King at the :55 and :13 points respectively for a 16-8 final score.
Offensively Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand), Katherine Biehle (Visalia, Calif.) and Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawai'i) led Pacific, scoring three goals apiece. Junior Kailiee Bucknum Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded five saves in the cage for Pacific.
The Tigers return to action Saturday, April 10 at 12 p.m. against UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif.
