    Men and Women's Swimming: Tigers Finish Day Two of the Big West Championships

    The men and women's swim team continued competition at the Big West Championships on Thursday, February 18.

    After finishing fifth in the 500 Free Preliminaries with a time of 5:01.02, sophomore Jayme Swalin (Kenmore, Wash.) touched the wall in 4:54.44 to come in second in the finals. Freshman Jenna Chaplin (Nassau, Bahamas) finished ninth during the preliminaries with a time of 5:07.40, while sophomore Elena Walterman (Framingham, Mass.) finished 11th registering a 5:10.11.

    Senior Devonie Migues (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) swam a 2:03.41 in the 200 IM preliminaries to capture third and improved her time to 2:02.99 in the finals for the third place finish. Fellow senior Melissa McGhee (Elk Grove, Calif.) finished sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 2:05.74.

    Freshman Becca Wyant (Redmond, Wash.) swam a 24.26 in the 50 Free preliminaries, with the top time a 22.60 by Anne Marie May from UC Santa Barbara. On the men's side junior Aljaz Ojstersek (Ljubljana, Slovenia) placed 11th in the 500 Free preliminaries recording a time of 4:38.29. The next three swimmers to finish were all Tigers, with freshman Bart Platow (Westport, Conn.), touching at 4:38.95, freshman Zach Zlotoff (San Jose, Calif.) at 4:40.96 and junior Tyler Hannis (Santa Rosa, Calif.) at 4:41.23.


    Recording a time of 1:53.57, freshman RJ Barton (Modesto, Calif.) placed ninth in the 200 IM. Sophomore Kevin Byers (Puyallup, Wash.) touched at 1:53.70 to take 10th place. Sophomore Steven Woods (Walnut Creek, Calif.) swam a 20.73 in the 50 Free preliminaries to finish sixth and went on to finish sixth in the finals with a time of 20.55. Freshmen Kevin Schirmer (Danville, Calif.) and Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) finished 13th and 14th in the preliminaries with times of 21.41 and 21.50, respectively.

    In the final event of the night the women's team made up of McGhee, Mallory McGowan, Walterman and Migues touched the wall in 3:47.92 to finish fourth in the 400 Medley Relay. For the men Byers, Nathan LeRoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Chris Weber (Chico, Calif.) and Woods came in fourth in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:23.75.

    The Tigers return to the pool on Friday, Feb. 19 for day three of the Big West Championships.
