Pacific Men's Basketball - UC Davis 62, Pacific 59
The Pacific men's basketball team dropped a 62-59 decision at UC Davis on Wednesday, Feb. 10. The Tigers fell to 15-8 overall, 8-3 in Big West Conference action. UC Davis improved to 10-13, 6-5 in league play.
Pacific fell behind early as the Aggies took an 8-4 lead, but three-pointers from junior Demetrece Young (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and senior Lavar Neufville (Fairfield, Calif.) keyed a 14-2 run as the Tigers took an 18-10 lead with 11:09 lead. The Tigers led 25-16 with 4:50 to play in the first half, but were 0-5 from the field with a pair of turnovers the rest of the way. UCD finished the half on an 11-1 run to take a 27-26 lead at the break. Julian Welch scored eight points in the run to finish with 12 in the first half, five points over his seasonal average.
In the second half of the game, the score was tied 12 times and there were eight lead changes. With the Tigers down one after the first three minutes of the second half, junior Nyika Williams (Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) scored on three straight possessions to give Pacific a 37-32 lead with 14:43 to play in the game. The Aggies pulled ahead 50-46 after a 16-7 run, before junior Terrell Smith (Federal Way, Wash.) scored seven straight points for the Tigers to even it up again at 53-53. With just more than two minutes left in the game, Smith drove the line for a dunk to give the Tigers a 56-55 lead. Joe Harden scored on a jumper to give UC Davis a 57-56 lead with two minutes to play. Each team hit a pair of free throws, then Harden hit one of two to give the Aggies a 60-58 lead with :34 seconds to play. With a chance to tie or take the lead, Young was whistled for a charge to give UC Davis the ball back. Harden hit another pair of free throws to make it a 62-58 lead with :12 seconds to go. Freshman Allen Huddleston was fouled attempting a three-point shot, making one of the first two foul shots. Huddleston intentionally missed the third shot, with UCD losing the ball out of bounds. That gave the Tigers just over a second for a final three-point attempt that was off the mark by Young.
Smith led the Tigers with 16 points, 12 in the second half. Senior Michael Nunnally (Stockton, Calif.) added 13 points, while junior Sam Willard (Pierre, S.D.) had nine points. Pacific made just five of 23 three-point attempts (21.7 percent), while the Aggies hit six of 14, all by different players. Pacific outscored the Aggies 32-20 in the paint. The loss snapped a 49 game series winning streak for the Tigers over the Aggies, dating back to 1940.
Pacific is next in action at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, February 13. The tipoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Rabobank Arena.
