    SWIM: Tigers Finish Day One of the Big West Championships

    In the first day of the 2010 Big West Men's and Women's Swimming Championships, Pacific's men's swim team finished strong coming in third with 92 team points while the women finished fourth with 82 team points.

     

    UC Santa Barbara kicked of the championships finishing first in the men's and women's 200 Medley Relay while UC Davis came in first in the men's and women's 800 Free Relay. In individual events Cal Poly had swimmers claim the top spot in the men's and women's 1000 Free.

     

    In the 200 Medley Relay Pacific's men's swim team consisting of Kevin Byers (Puyallup, Wash.), Chris Weber (Valencia, Calif.), Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) and Steven Woods (Walnut Creek, Calif.) touched the wall in 1:33. 51 for the fifth place spot.

     

    Pacific's women's swim team picked up most of its points on the day in the 1000 Free. Lacy Buck of Cal Poly claimed the top spot with sophomore Jayme Swalin (Kenmore, Wash.) and senior KC Albiston (Salt Lake City, Utah) coming in second and third with times of 10:01.80 and 10:04.91 respectively. Freshman Jenna Chaplin (Nassau, Bahamas) touched the wall in 10:30.06 to finish eighth.

     

    On the men's side, Matt Waggoner of Cal Poly was the top swimmer in the men's 1000 Free. Junior Aljaz Ojstersek (Ljubljana, Slovenia) rounded out the top five with a time of 9:26.16. Freshmen Bart Platow (Westport, Conn.) and Zach Zlotoff (San Jose, Calif.) finished back-to-back for the ninth and tenth place spots with times of 9:34.87 and 9:39.14 respectively.

     

    In the final women's event of the night UC Davis took first in the 800 Free Relay while setting a new Big West meet record with a time of 7:18.84. Pacific's relay team made up of Swalin, Albiston, sophomore Elena Walterman (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Devonie Migues (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) closed out the day finishing third with a time of 7:29.49. Pacific's men's swim team comprised of junior Tyler Hannis (Santa Rosa, Calif.), freshman RJ Barton (Modesto, Calif.), senior Patrick Walton (Lodi, Calif.) and Byers closed out the night finishing fourth in the 800 Free Relay touching the wall with a time of 6:51.75.

     

    Pacific returns to the pool tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 18 for day two of the Big West Swimming Championships.
