Pacific Women's Tennis: Tigers Trounce Highlanders; Win 7-0 on Road

    Feb 28, 2010
In its second road conference match in two days, the Pacific women's tennis team routed UC Riverside, 7-0, Sunday afternoon.  The Tigers improve to a 4-7 record overall, 1-1 in the Big West.  UCR fell to 2-5 overall, 0-2 in the Big West.

"No major drama today," said Head Coach Bob Chiene.  "Yesterday we waited five hours to play.  But it's good that we played.  We came out and played tough today."

Junior Olga Gumenyuk (Kiev, Ukraine) and freshman Christina Goehl (Karlsruhe, Germany) opened scoring for Pacific by handling Taylor Raney and Natalie McKay easily on their way to an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles position.  Junior Jenifer Widjaja (Sao Roque, Brazil) and senior Sasha Fisher (Southampton, Bermuda) secured the doubles point with their 8-6 win at the No. 1 doubles position over Angelique Corpuz and Roxanne Plata.

With a 1-0 lead, Pacific swept the Highlanders in singles play to earn its first conference win this season.

No. 122 ranked Widjaja relinquished just one game to Nadia Sakhakorn at the No. 1 singles position before winning 6-1, 6-0 to improve her record to 8-3 overall.  Gumenyuk gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead after defeating McKay 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 position.  But it was Goehl at the No. 2 spot who guaranteed a Tiger win when she took down Raney again, 6-1, 6-3.

Continuing a month long road trip, the Tigers travel to UC Santa Barbara for their third straight conference match on March 6.  Match time is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
