Pacific Men's Volleyball: Tigers Drop a Four Game Contest to No. 2 Stanford, 3-1
The game scores for the match were: 30-24, 28-30, 30-16, and 31-29.
With the first game tied 8-8, Stanford went on a 5-0 run, to take a 12-7 lead over the Tigers. At 22-15, Pacific rallied three straight points to close the gap to 22-18. Kills from freshmen Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia), followed by a service ace from senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) triggered the three point run for the Tigers. At 28-24 Stanford scored the final two points of the game to win 30-24.
Pacific scored four of the first five points in the second game to jump out to an early 4-1 lead over Stanford. Hughes and sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) each posted a kill and Borchin aced the Stanford defense again to boost the rally. With the game knotted 9-9, the Cardinal went on a four point run to take 13-9 lead over the Tigers. But Pacific answered back with a five point rally to go ahead 14-13. Vukicevic, Borchin, and Hughes each registered a kill during the run. Trailing 28-27, the Tigers finished strong with three straight points, including a solo block by sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) to record the final point of the game, as Pacific took the set 30-28.
The Cardinal was leading Pacific 6-5 in the third game, when Stanford went on an eight point run to jump out in front 14-5. The Tigers could not get a rally started, as Stanford increased their lead to 13, at 24-11. At 29-14, sophomore Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii) posted a kill, followed by a combined block from Gornik and Vukicevic on the next play to take the score to 29-16. But a kill by the Cardinal closed out the set 30-16.
Daley posted 12 kills on 15 swings for the Tigers. Hughes racked 23 kills and eight digs.
Brad Lawson for Stanford registered a match-high 27 kills.
The Tigers will be back on the court on Friday, March 5 to take on Long Beach State at the Alex G. Spanos Center for a 7:00 pm start time.
