    Feb 3, 2010
The Pacific men's volleyball team fell to No. 5 Stanford by a score of 3-1 Wednesday, February 3. With the loss the Tigers drop to 4-7 on the season and 0-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Cardinal improved to 4-3 overall and 4-3 in the MPSF.

    The game scores were: 30-22, 28-30, 30-20, and 30-26.

With Pacific trailing 9-7 in the first game, two kills and a block for Stanford brought them out in front 12-7. The Tigers rallied three straight at 22-12, including a kill and a service ace from freshman Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia), to take the score to 22-15. Later in the set with the Cardinal leading 28-18, sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) racked a kill to start a three point run for the Tigers. Vukicevic and freshman Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) combined for a block on the next play to continue the rally, which brought the score to 28-21. Stanford would close out the first game 30-22.

Pacific trailed early in the second game, as the Cardinal captured a quick 3-0 lead. They would stay in front until a five point run at 10-6, put the Tigers ahead 11-10. During this rally freshman setter Patrick Tunnell (Tucson, Ariz.) registered a kill and an ace, while Gornik and Hughes posted a kill of their own. Vukicevic and Hughes also combined for a block to complete the run. Later in the set, after Stanford took back a lead at 21-19, the Tigers tied the game, with a kill from Hughes and another kill from Gornik. After this point, the two teams would battle through five more tie scores. At 26-26, the Tigers rallied two straight to bring the score to 28-26, two points away from taking the game. But Stanford would score the next two points to tie the game at 28-28. The next two points went to Pacific as Gornik recorded a kill and Hughes posted a block, as Pacific captured the game 30-28.

In the first 10 points of the third game, the Cardinal outscored the Tigers 7-3. This made for a lot of ground for Pacific to make up. At 11-7, Stanford jumped ahead by seven, at 14-7, with a three point run. Later in the set the Tigers tried to chip away at the Cardinal lead, scoring three consecutive points at 21-14, to take the score to 21-17. Senior Jason Bochin (Roseville, Calif.) had a kill and sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) recorded a solo block during the rally. At 26-20, Stanford finished out the set, 30-20, scoring four straight points on the Tigers.

The two teams fought through 17 tie scores during the fourth game. With the score knotted 3-3, a block combining Borchin, Vukicevic, and Hughes started a three point rally, which put the Tigers in front 6-3. Slowly the Tigers surrendered their lead and the game was tied again at 7-7. Later in the set at 19-19, Hughes and Daley each racked a kill to put the Tigers out in front 21-19. Moments later, at 22-22, Stanford scored two straight to take the score to 24-22. A kill from Gornik added a point to the Tigers score at 24-23, but the Cardinal answered back with a three point run. This put Stanford ahead of Pacific, 27-23. Vukicevic, Hughes, and a Cardinal error narrowed the gap momentarily at 27-26. But three straight Stanford kills ended the game 30-26, and the match 3-1.

Hughes led the Tigers with 22 kills, eight digs and six blocks. Gornik had 16 kills and 10 digs.

Stanford was led by Evan Romero and Brad Lawson, each recording 17 kills.

The Tigers will be back at the Alex G. Spanos Center for a two-game home stand starting on Friday, February 5 at 7:00pm. The Tigers will be taking on the Quincy Hawks.
