    Pacific Men's Volleyball: Tigers Snap Losing Streak with Win Against Quincy, 3-0

    The Pacific men's volleyball team remained undefeated in non-conference action with a victory against the Quincy Hawks on Friday, February 5. With the win the Tigers improved to 5-7 overall and the Hawks dropped to 2-3 on the year.

    The game score for the match were: 30-18, 30-24, and 30-23.

    Leading 4-3 in the first game, the Tigers took the score to 5-3 with a Quincy service error. Sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) racked a kill and a Quincy recorded a service error, to take block by freshmen Patrick Tunnell (Tucson, Ariz.) and Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) brought the Tigers out in front 7-3. At 11-8, Hughes registered a kill from the outside. On the next play, senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) aced the Hawk defense to take the score to 13-8. With Vukicevic behind the line at 14-10, another ace put the Tigers out in front 15-10. Sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) put it down to make the score 16-10.

    At 18-13, Tunnell jumped up to block a Quincy attack, starting a six point Tiger rally, bringing the score to 24-13. Vukicevic had two kills in the run and Gornik and Borchin each had one.

    At 25-16, Borchin racked a kill and Gornik put it past the block on the next play as the Tigers jumped out in front 27-16. A Hawk error on the next play brought the score to 28-16. Hughes successfully attacked from the right side at 29-18, as the Tigers captured the first game, 30-18. Pacific hit .633, compared to .048 by Quincy.

    With the Hawks leading 2-1 in the first set, the Tigers captured a 3-2 lead with a kill from Hughes and a block by Daley and Hughes on the next play. At 8-5, Pacific scored two straight, taking a 10-5 lead. Pacific ended a three point Quincy rally with a kill from Vukicevic, which brought the score to 12-9. A two point Tiger run consisting of kill from Daley and a block from Tunnell gave the Tigers a 18-12 lead.

    Pacific took their lead to 26-19, with a three point rally including a combined block by Hughes, Daley, and Gornik, and a service ace by Hughes. The Hawks scored the next three to points to slightly narrow the Tiger lead to 26-22. But a service error by Quincy put the game point on the board for Pacific as they took the game 30-24.

    In the third game, Pacific scored the first three points with two kills from Hughes and one from Vukicevic. A three point Tiger run at 4-3 pushed them in front 7-3. Daley registed a block and Gornik put it down from the outside during the rally. Quincy scored three straight at 10-6, putting themselves within one at 10-9. The Tigers answered back by scoring the next four points, taking a 14-9 lead.

    Two aces from Borchin and a kill from Hughes boosted a four point Tiger rally at 15-10, to take the score to 19-10. Pacific pushed to 22-12 on a Hawk service error and an attack past the block.

    At 27-19, Borchin attacked from the outside to register a kill for the Tigers, bringing the score to 28-19. Quincy scored three at 28-19 to take the score to 28-22, but a service error by the Hawks and a kill from Daley closed out the game for the Tigers by a score of 30-23 and the match 3-0.

    Pacific was led by Gornik, who had a match-high of 12 kills. Daley had eight kills, hitting .538, and posted seven blocks.

    The Hawks were led by Joseph Ascher with seven kills.

    The Tigers will be back in action for the second match-up against Quincy on Saturday, February 6 for a 3:00 pm start time
