Women's Water Polo: No. 16 Pacific Cruises Past Santa Clara, 11-4
Santa Clara opened the first quarter taking the 1-0 lead at the 7:02 mark on a goal from Meg Zimmerman. Pacific quickly responded 21 seconds later with a goal from junior Bridget Geck (Huntington Beach, Calif.) to tie the game at one goal a piece. Sarah Safir of Santa Clara notched a goal at the 2:26 mark to gave the Broncos the 2-1 lead. Junior Meara McCarthy (Simsbury, Conn.) found the back of the net with 1:07 on the clock to make it a 2-2 contest. With :39 left in regulation freshman Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand) notched a goal to give Pacific it's first lead of the game and put the Tigers up 3-2.
Myles single-handedly gave Pacific the four point lead scoring four consecutive goals in a seven minute span. In the second quarter she scored Pacific's three goals, finding the back of the net at the 7:21, 4:30 and 1:30 points. Freshman Brooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) registered three saves in the cage while the Tiger defense held the Broncos scoreless in the quarter.
Pacific entered the third quarter with a 6-2 lead over the Broncos and gained an eight point advantage on back-to-back goals from junior Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawai'i) at the 4:55 and 2:42 spots. Sophomore Katherine Biehle (Visalia, Calif.) put the Tigers in front 9-2, scoring a goal with 2:06 remaining on the clock. For the second time in the contest Santa Clara was held scoreless as Millar picked up two saves in the cage during the quarter.
In the final frame Rachelle Stowe of Santa Clara found the back of the net at the 4:21 spot to cut Pacific's lead to six. JuniorsBethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) and Melissa Loper (Napa, Calif.) scored consecutive goals at the 2:16 and 1:07 points respectively to make it an 11-3 contest. With :38 left on the clock Santa Clara's Alison Norris notched the Broncos final goal for a final score of 11-4.
The Tigers were led by freshman Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand) who notched four goals in the contest. FreshmanBrooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) recorded 11 saves and five steals in the cage for Pacific.
Pacific resumes action on Friday, Feb. 25, when the Tigers host California Baptist at 2 p.m.
