    Pacific men's volleyball: Tigers Drop to the Cougars, 3-0

    The Pacific men's volleyball team fell to BYU on Saturday, January 16 by a score of 3-0.  With the loss the Tigers fall to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).  BYU improves to 4-1 on the season.

    The set scores for the match were: 30-21, 30-26, and 30-23.

    Trailing 4-2 in the first set, the Tigers rallied three points to take a 5-4 lead over the Cougars. Included in this run was a kill from sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) and a block by Daley, senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.), and freshman Patrick Tunnell (Tucson, Ariz.). Later in the set, with the Cougars leading 19-15, sophomore Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.) racked a kill and an error by BYU brought the Tigers within two at 19-17. But the Cougars answered back by scoring four straight taking the score to 23-17. At 27-18, the Pacific slightly closed the gap with two BYU errors, taking the score to 27-20. At 29-20, Daley registered another kill for the Tigers, but BYU would take the set 30-21.

    The Tigers scored the first two points of the second set, with the first from a kill from senior Clay Ostrander (Wheaton, Ill.). With two Cougar errors, the Tigers increased their lead to 4-1. With Pacific still leading at 7-4, BYU had a four point run to take a 8-7. Pacific didn't let that lead last long, rallying three straight to lead 10-8. A block by sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) and Hindsley boosted the Tiger rally. Still leading 14-13, the Tigers posted a three point run, with a kill from Borchin and a block by senior Kevin Downing (Poipu, Hawaii), Daley, and Gornik widening the lead to 17-13. Later in the set, with the Pacific ahead 19-16, the Cougars scored four straight to take a 20-19 lead. With BYU taking a 26-25 lead, they added two more to take the score to 28-25. A kill from Gornik would give the Tigers a sideout but the Cougars recovered and rallied game point to take the set 30-26.

    BYU captured an early 6-3 lead in the third set, but the Tigers rallied back within one with a kill from Gornik to take the score to 6-5. With the Cougars still leading at 12-11, a three point rally brought the score to 15-11 in BYU's favor. Trailing 20-14, Pacific had a three point run led by a kill from Borchin to take the score to 20-17. At 29-22, a BYU game point, Borchin racked a kill to bring the score to 29-23. But BYU would rally the final point to take the set 30-23 and the match 3-0.

    The Tigers were led by Gornik, who had 10 kills and three blocks. BYU was led by Robb Stowell, who had a match-high of 13 kills.

    Pacific will be back in action on Tuesday, January 19 to take on Hawai'i at 7:00 pm at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
