Pacific Men's Basketball - Pacific 72, UC Riverside 57
The Pacific men's basketball team picked up a 72-57 win at UC Riverside on Saturday, Jan. 30. With the victory, the Tigers improved to 14-6 overall, 7-1 in Big West Conference play. UC Riverside dropped to 8-13 overall, 2-7 in league play.
UC Riverside took an early 8-4 lead, fueled by its largest crowd of the year (1,932). The Tigers shrugged it off, taking a 14-10 lead with 10:40 to play in the half after a 10-2 run with the scoring spread out over five players. With Pacific leading 22-18, a 15-4 run over the next 6:30 of the first half gave the Tigers a 37-22 lead. Five points from junior Sam Willard (Pierre, S.D.) sparked the run. The Highlanders' Bryson Hampton scored to make it a 37-24 Pacific lead at the break.
The Tigers took a 20-point lead (48-28) four minutes into the second half after a 7-0 run keyed by Willard's second three-pointer. The Highlanders cut the lead back to 15, but a 14-6 run over the next four minutes gave the Tigers a 66-43 lead. Freshman Allen Huddleston (Merced, Calif.) hit back-to-back three-pointers to cap the run, while Junior Demetrece Young (Oklahoma City, Okla.) scored eight points in the stretch. The Tigers' lead did not fall below 13 the rest of the way.
Willard led Pacific with 20 points and seven rebounds. Young added 13 points and four assists, while senior Joe Ford (Altadena, Calif.) added 10 points. Sean Cunningham led the Highlanders with 11 points.
Taking good care of the ball, the Tigers had a season-low four turnovers in the game. The teams were even in offensive rebounds with 13 each, but Pacific held a 34-30 overall rebounding edge.
The Tigers are next in action with a home game against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Feb. 4 in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
