    Pacific Men's Volleyball: Tigers Start off 2010 Season with a Victory Against UC Santa Cruz, 3-0

    Pacific men's volleyball team kicked off the new year with a victory against UC Santa Cruz by a score of 3-0 on Friday, January 8. With this win the Tigers go to 1-0 on the season and the Banana Slugs fall to 0-1.

    The set scores for the match were: 30-23, 30-16, and 30-22.


    In the first set the Tigers captured a quick 4-1 lead as they forced UC Santa Cruz into three consecutive errors.  Pacific increased their lead to 9-2, with the five point rally starting with a kill from freshman Nicola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia).  The 

    Banana Slugs continued to push and tied the score at 12-12.  The two teams continued to battle back and forth as they knotted four more times.  At 18-18, the Tigers registered four straight points including a block by sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.), senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.), and freshman Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) to take the score to 22-18.  With the score at 27-23 in the Tigers favor, sophomore Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.) racked a kill, which was followed by a block from sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria), Hindsley, and Hughes pushing the Tigers to 29-23.  A kill from Hughes finished off the set for the Tigers by a score of 30-23.

    The second set started off with a kill from Borchin, which was followed by a service ace from senior Kevin Downing (Poipu, Hawaii) to take Pacific to a 2-0 lead.  Later in the set the Tigers went on a six point rally.  Daley registered a kill and two service aces during this run.  At 15-7, Hughes recorded another kill for the Tigers to take the score to 16-7.  Two more Tiger points brought the score to 18-7 as Borchin also racked a kill and Gornik aced the Banana Slugs.  With the Tigers maintaining their lead at 24-13, three consecutive blocks assisted by Hindsley and Hughes by the Tigers brought the score to 27-14.  A service error by UC Santa Cruz at 29-16, earned the game point for the Tigers as they took the second set 30-16.

    The beginning of the third set was a battle as the two teams fought through eight tie scores through the first 22 points of the game.  At 11-11, the Tigers jumped out to a 14-11 lead, with two service aces by Gornik.  A solo block by Hughes at 15-12 earned the Tigers a four point lead at 16-12.  Three straight kills registered by Hughes at 22-18 put the Tigers within five of a victory at 25-18.  Sophomore Ryan Spencer (Santa Maria, Calif.) recorded game point for Tigers as they took the set 30-22 and the set 3-0.

    Hughes had a match high of 12 kills and 10 blocks, which Daley recorded eight.  UC Santa Cruz was lead by Brad Sullivan who had 10 kills.

    The Tigers will take on Grand Canyon University at 7:00 pm on January 8.
