    Pacific men's volleyball: Tigers Fall in First Match of Weekend to No. 10 UC Santa Barbara, 3-0

    The Pacific men's volleyball team dropped the match of the weekend to No. 10 UC Santa Barbara, 3-0, on Friday, January 29. With the loss the Tigers fall to 4-5 on the season and 0-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Gauchos improve to 4-5 on the season and 4-2 in the MPSF.

    The game scores for the match were: 30-24, 30-16, and 30-21.

    Knotted at four in the first set, UC Santa Barbara scored three straight to take a 7-4 lead over the Tigers. Committing seven service errors in the first game, the Tigers were unable to get a rally started. At 21-18, Pacific narrowed the gap to 21-20, with a kill from freshman Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and a service ace from senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.). But at 27-24, the Gauchos posted three straight to take the game, 30-24.

    In the second set, UC Santa Barbara jumped out to a quick 5-1 over the Tigers with a three point rally. With five more service errors for Pacific during this game, the Tigers would never be able to close the lead. At 20-12, the Gauchos added onto the score with four straight points to take a 24-12 lead. UC Santa Barbara would finish the set 30-16. During the set the Tigers hit -.130, compared to the Gauchos .476.

    With the Gauchos taking the first three points of the third set, a kill from sophomore Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.) ended the UC Santa Barbara rally. Later in the set with the Tigers trailing 14-9, two errors by the Gauchos, pulled Pacific within three at 14-11. At 17-12, Hindsley racked a kill and then stepped behind the line to register one of Pacific's two service aces. This brought the score to 18-14. But at 27-21, the Tigers were unable to stop the Gauchos as they closed out the game, 30-21.

    The Tigers were led by sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.), who had 11 kills. Senior Kevin Downing (Poipu, Hawaii) had 31 assists and six digs.

    Cullen Irons had a match-high of 15 kills to lead the Gauchos.

    Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, January 30 at 7:30 pm in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
