John Legend brings the documentary “Waiting for Superman” to University of the Pacific
It is no secret that public schools all across the country are failing, including many in Stockton Unified. These "drop out factories" are the subject of the groundbreaking documentary by David Guggenheim, the maker of "An Inconvenient Truth", being shown in Stockton. This special event will include a question and answer session and acoustic performance by six time Grammy Award winner John Legend who wrote the soundtrack for the film.
The movie and concert will be held in the Bob Hope Theatre on October 2nd. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the movie, "Waiting for Superman", will begin promptly at 7 p.m., followed by a question and answer session with John Legend and the acoustic performance. No one will be seated once the movie starts, so the public is advised to arrive early.
Tickets go on sale for the public this morning and can be purchased for $30-$35 at Bob Hope Theatre or Stocktontickets.com. Pacific students can purchase tickets from the front desk of the DeRosa University Center for $15, one ticket per student with ID card.
"We have been trying to get John Legend here for several years now and are excited that he is finally coming" said Elisa Asato, the Arts and Entertainment Commissioner for Associated Students University of the Pacific. "This concert is unique for ASUOP; we will not only have a concert but a very important movie followed by a question and answer session".
Every student at University of the Pacific that is a registered tutor through the Center for Community Involvement for this 2010-2011 academic year will receive a free ticket to the show. Through this incentivized program, Pacific is hoping to teach its own students the importance of education and giving back to the community. This is the same way that John Legend is incentivizing members of the Stockton community, and surrounding areas, to see the documentary, by performing after the film.
Pacific is one of five universities in the country that will have a John Legend performance this semester and is the only University that "Waiting for Superman" will be shown at followed by a question and answer session and a John Legend performance. The rare viewing of an independent documentary in the Central Valley will be occurring just one week after the documentary is released on September 24th.
