Pacific women's basketball: Davin Johnson Joins Pacific's Women's Basketball Staff

    Aug 24, 2010

University of the Pacific and head coach Lynne Roberts has announced the hiring of Davin Johnson as an assistant women's basketball coach.

"I am so glad to be a part of Pacific's basketball program and am thrilled to have the opportunity to coach under Lynne Roberts," said Johnson. "I am looking forward to working with a coaching staff and an athletic department that is passionate and dedicated about reaching new heights and helping players achieve unprecedented success on and off the court."

Johnson joins the Pacific staff after spending the last nine years teaching basketball at various levels. Six years ago Johnson became the co-founder and head coach of the NorCal Elite Basketball Club where his program and his players have been recognized on a national level as being one of the top AAU girls basketball programs in the United States. NorCal Elite has recruited players from all over the north state, including Sacramento, Stockton, San Francisco, San Jose, Fairfield, Reno, Chico, Redding, Eureka, and Gilroy among many other cities. NorCal Elite was also the first girls team in Northern California to have a player from overseas (Japan) participate in Exposure tournaments in the summer.

In addition to coaching AAU, Johnson also started a basketball training business nine years ago that offered personal basketball lessons, camps, and clinics. This business was renowned for offering some of the best basketball training techniques in Northern California. Through these services, Johnson personally trained men and women collegiate players, as well as men playing professionally overseas and women playing in the WNBA.

Davin has helped over 50 girls go on to receive basketball scholarships in college, as well as personally trained and coached elite players, McDonald's All-American and state record holders.

Johnson began his coaching career nine years ago as the Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at Forest Lake Christian in Auburn, California. Originally from San Diego, Johnson grew up playing basketball in Monterey, Calif. before attending Grand Canyon University on a basketball scholarship. Later, he moved to Sacramento where his family has resided for the last 12 years.

"Davin Johnson is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff," said Roberts. "He brings instant recruiting, because of his connections and contacts with the top talent in California. He has coached some of the best players in the history of Northern California and is well respected across the board in recruiting. He is also a very good coach, having been a head coach for nine years. He will not only be an obvious help in recruiting, but will also bring in very solid coaching experience. Davin is a quality guy that will be a boost to our staff. I am really excited to have him on board."

Johnson replaces Justin Wilson who coached at Pacific the past four years. Wilson took a job this July to be closer to home in San Jose as a computer technician for the San Jose School District.
