Pacific’s Junior Rowing Club Member Finishes Seventh at National Championships
Carl Reinke brought pride to University of the Pacific's Deep Water Junior Rowing Club last week when he finished seventh overall at the 2010 U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships. The event was held June 11-13 at Harsha Lake in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The 16-year-old won the petite final in a time of 7:31.7 and earned the fifth fastest time overall in the finals of the men's youth single sculls.
Reinke was coached by Eric Weir, Pacific's director of rowing and deep water coach. Weir is also coach of Pacific's rowing team, Pacific Crew. The team often offers its coaching staff and University equipment to Deep Waters junior and masters rowing programs. Deep Water Juniors is a high school community rowing program sponsored by Pacific.
"We are extraordinarily proud of his performance, especially since he is two years younger than most of his competitors," Weir said.
Weir said Reinke trained three hours a day for nine months to win the Southwest regional, which was necessary to qualify for the Championships, and trained twice a day during the month leading up to the event.
In an early round of the Championships competition, Reinke defeated eventual silver medalist and defending national champion, Matt Maddamma from Steel City Rowing Club, by 4.5 seconds. In the semi-final however he failed to place in the top three, taking fourth place.
"Carl had been battling a head cold for a few days and just didn't have the reserve he needed to prevail," Weir said. "(But) in true champion fashion however, Reinke rebounded physically and mentally to reclaim his strong performance."
Reinke, who was the men's team captain for Deep Water Juniors last season, is being recruited to row at UC Berkeley and University of Washington next year.
Pacific's Deep Water Rowing club is planning to hold two three-day beginner rowing camps this summer to get more local youth involved in the sport of rowing.
