    Pacific Women's Soccer - Pacific 1, Hawai'i 0

    Aug 21, 2010

The Pacific women's soccer team opened up the 2010 season with a 1-0 victory at Hawai'i on Friday, August 20 in front of a crowd of 1,672 in the 'OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. It is the fifth time in the last six years that the Tigers have picked up a victory in the season opener.

In a well-played game, it was a lone Tiger tally in the second half that proved to be the game-winner. Junior Kristina Wavomba dribbled the ball on the baseline before sending a pass across to Angelica Figueroa in the middle of the box, who made an outstanding one touch pass to sophomore Laura Hernandez. Placing the ball perfectly to the far post from the left side of the box, Hernandez notched the only goal of the contest at the 57:01 mark.

"We played a very strong second half and had several solid chances," said Tiger head coach Keith Coleman. "Hawaii played very hard and really fed off the big crowd. This was a quality win in a place where wins aren't easy to come by."

Pacific senior Jill Medigovich stopped three shots on goal, as Hawai'i out-shot the Tigers 12-6. Despite being outshot, the Tigers had three more corner kicks with an 8-5 edge. Pacific drew 15 fouls while Hawaii had 10.

It is the second one-goal victory for the Tigers over Hawai'i in as many years. Pacific came away with a 3-2 win last season on the road.

The Tigers are next in action Saturday, August 21 against Wagner. The game will begin at 10:00 p.m. (PST)
