Pacific women's soccer: Pacific Dominates Wagner But Falls 1-0

    Aug 22, 2010

Despite dominating all aspects of their contest against Wagner on Saturday, August 21, the Pacific soccer team suffered its first set back of the 2010 season as they fell 1-0 to the Seahawks. The loss was the first loss of the season for the Tigers as they fell to 1-1 on the year and in the 'OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout while Wagner improved to 1-0.

An early mistake proved to be the Tigers' downfall in their final game of the shootout as the Seahawks made Pacific pay for a foul near the penalty box just five minutes into the game, converting on a free kick to take an early lead. After a foul set up the free kick, Jessica Panarella converted one of just two shots on the game for the Seahawks as she placed a shot into the top corner of the net past freshman Tashia Long (Sandy, Utah), who earned her first career collegiate start against Wagner, to put her team up 1-0 just 5:12 into the game. Panarella was setup by Julie Vigliotti and Monica Zurich as Vigliotti played the free kick into the box quickly where Zurich one touched the pass to Panarella to setup the score.

After giving up the early strike, the Tigers took total control of the contest against the Seahawks as they dominated their opponents for the entirety of the match. Throughout the evening Pacific outshot Wagner 18-2, led by sophomore Maricela Padilla (San Jose, Calif.) who tallied four shots off the bench. In addition to Padilla's four shots, senior Kim Hargrave (La Palma, Calif.) and junior Alex Topp (San Diego, Calif.) each added three shots for the Tigers.

For Wagner, Panarella tallied the only two shots on the night, putting both on net as Long stopped the only other shot she faced in 45:00 minutes of action, Senior Jill Medigovich (San Diego, Calif.) took over in goal for the Tigers in the second half of action, but she did not face a shot in the final 45:00 minutes of action.

Pacific will be back in action on Sunday, August 29, as the Tigers open their home schedule against Sacramento State. The Tigers and the Hornets will face off at 6;00 pm at Stagg Memorial Stadium.
