Pacific Baseball Wins Fifth-Straight Series With 8-7 Victory At San Jose State

    Mar 27, 2010
In their sixth try, the Pacific baseball team won its sixth series after an 8-7 victory at San Jose State on Saturday, March 27.

The Tigers improved their record to 15-7 on the year while the Spartans dropped to 9-12 in 2010.

For the second-straight day, the Tigers jumped out early offensively and led 2-0 by the middle of the third inning. However, LHP David Rowse (Pleasanton, Calif.) relinquished five runs in the bottom half of the inning to give San Jose State a 5-2 lead.

A half inning later, the Tigers rallied back in the top of the fourth. Senior Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.) kicked off the frame with a single into right field. Junior J.B. Brown (Alvin, Texas) followed that up by driving a single into right center field to put both runners in scoring position. With two outs in inning, freshman John Haberman (Stockton, Calif.) smashed the inning's second double to bring home both Walker and Brown, to cut the Spartan's lead down to one, 5-4.

Trying to bounce back and salvage the series, the Spartans posted their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth after Kerry Jenkins homered to left field off Rowse, driving in himself and Danny Stienstra. After six, San Jose State led 7-4.

Down by three runs, Pacific came back and tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Ben Gorang (Turlock, Calif.) kicked off the inning after seeing one pitch, by singling up the middle. Senior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) attempted a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error by third baseman Corey Valine, kept Oliveira aboard safely as Gorang came around to third. With runners at the corners, junior Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases.

Then sophomore Brett Christopher (Livermore, Calif.) grounded out to first base and brought home Gorang and moved Oliveira over to third as Pacific cut the deficit, 7-5. San Jose State then went to the bullpen, but junior Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) grounded out to shortstop and brought home Oliveira while Longmire moved over to third. The Tigers then trailed by one run, 7-6. With two outs Pacific was still able to come through and produce as Walker singled through the right side and tied the contest, 7-7.

Rowse kept the Spartans scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, giving way for the Tigers to come through and help Rowse to his fifth win of 2010. With two outs in the top of the eighth inning, Gorang doubled down the left field line and then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Oliveira took a free pass to first base. With runners at the corners, Longmire singled up the middle and scored Gorang to give the Tigers the final 8-7 run.

Rowse earned the win and improved to 5-0 on the year while John Austin took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the year. Junior RHP Robbie Richardson (Lodi, Calif.) earned his second save of 2010. Offensively, Longmire paced the Tigers going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.

Both teams will close out the series at Klein Family Field for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, March 28.
