Pacific Men's Tennis: Castro Named Big West Athlete of the Week

Mar 3, 2010
Pacific mens tennis sophomore Ivan Castro (Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil) was named Big West Mens Tennis Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 28, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon. Castro went undefeated in singles play to earn the first conference honor of his career.

Ivan did a great job this week, said Head Coach Matt Lucas. Hes finally getting acclimated to college tennis. I still think his best tennis is ahead of him.

Castro gave Pacific a 2-1 lead against San Diego on Feb. 26 by upsetting No. 82 Nikola Bubnic at the No. 2 position. The three set win (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) marked his first over a ranked opponent and put him at .500 for the year with a 2-2 record overall.

He picked up another win over conference rival UC Santa Barbara by defeating Alex Konigsfeldt (6-3, 4-6, 6-2) at the No. 2 position on Feb. 28.

In his inaugural season, Castro now boasts a 4-2 overall record, 2-0 in the Big West. The Tigers look for him to continue his remarkable performance as they take on three ranked opponents at the UNLV tournament. Facing off against No. 70 Marquette first on March 5, Pacific will take on host No. 71 UNLV on March 6 before going head-to-head against No. 47 Hawaii on March 7. All matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. PST.
