Pacific Pharmacy Students to hold First Multicultural Health Fair

Mar 18, 2010

University of the Pacific pharmacy students will provide a number of free health services for the public on Saturday, March 27 during a health fair designed to target the local Vietnamese, Cambodian and Latino communities. The event is part of a continuous outreach effort by Pacific's Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy to raise health awareness in the Stockton community.

Sponsored by Pacific's professional pharmacy fraternity Phi Delta Chi, the first ever Phi Delta Chi/Walgreens Annual Multicultural Health Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of Walgreens, 7850 West Lane, which sits at the intersection of West and Hammer lanes. Vietnamese, Cambodian and Spanish translators will be on hand for the event, which is free and open to the public.

Pacific student pharmacists, physical therapists and dentists will team up with Walgreens pharmacy staff, which include Vietnamese and Cambodian pharmacists, to offer myriad health services, including screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and bone density. Free H1N1 immunization shots will also be available.

"Reaching out to the community is part of our core mission as America's first pharmacy professional fraternity," said Matt Veintimilla, president of Pacific's Phi Delta Chi chapter. "We strive to do whatever we can to serve local residents, particularly those who may not have easy access to these services and information."

During the health fair, organizers will collect donations to support Phi Delta Chi's "Prescription for Hope" campaign to benefit children with cancer at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Located in Memphis, the pediatric cancer research center is internationally recognized for finding cures and treating children with cancer and other diseases.

Throughout the year, pharmacy students conduct numerous health fairs in the Stockton community where they provide free health screenings and provide information to the community on prescription drug plans, smoking cessation, heartburn, asthma and other health-related topics.
