Pacific Women's Tennis: Pacific Falters at UC Santa Barbara; Fall 4-3 on Road
We are right there in the mix with teams in our conference, said Head Coach Bob Chiene. We fought hard and did our best. As long as we keep improving, we will be our best at the conference championships, which is really where it counts.
Pacific fell to a 4-8 overall record and 1-2 in the Big West.
No. 122 Jenifer Widjaja (Sao Roque, Brazil) started the Tigers off with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position, dominating her match against Sofia Novak. She is now 9-3 in singles play this spring with a 20-7 record overall this year.
The Tigers then lost four straight singles matches to drop the contest.
Freshman Christina Goehl (Karlsruhe, Germany) picked up Pacifics only other singles win at the No. 2 position. Now 7-5 in spring play, she defeated Natalia Lozano 7-5, 6-3.
Pacific eventually won its third point from doubles play. Widjaja and senior Sasha Fisher (Southampton, Bermuda) defeated Lozano and Jordan Dockendorf at the No. 1 position 9-7. And Goehl and junior Olga Gumenyuk (Kiev, Ukraine) secured the point with their win over Bryanna Ojeda and Asagi Onaga 8-4 at the No. 3 position.
Pacific continues play this weekend against conference opponents on Sunday, March 7. The Tigers travel to No. 71 Cal Poly for a 9:30 match.
