Pacific Women's Tennis: Tigers Sweep Fullerton 7-0 at Home

    Mar 28, 2010
The Pacific womens tennis team blasted its way out of a slump Sunday morning by sweeping Cal State Fullerton 7-0 in its first home match-up in over a month and a half. Every singles point was earned in straight sets with four Tigers relinquishing only one game in their matches. Pacific improved to a 4-10 overall record, 2-3 in the Big West.

We took care of business and stayed focused, said Head Coach Bob Chiene. A win is helpful considering all the 4-3 losses we have had. Its time to start our own win streak.

Senior Sasha Fisher (Southampton, Bermuda) and junior Jenifer Widjaja (Sao Roque, Brazil) started off scoring in the match with an 8-2 win over Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez at the No. 1 doubles position. The pair have won seven of their last nine matches and boast a 10-4 record this spring.

Newcomers Julia Hansen (Hamburg, Germany) and Sarah Irvin (Brisbane, Australia) secured the point by defeating Erin Weisener and Jerusha Cruz 8-3 at the No. 2 position.

Pacific dropped just four games at the top three singles positions, shutting out opponents in the second set of each match.

No. 91 Widjaja led the way by taking down Mai at the No. 1 position in straight sets (6-2, 6-0). She was followed by Hansen. The freshman earned her ninth win of the spring by allowing Weisener only one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 position.

Freshman Christina Goehl (Karlsruhe, Germany) clinched the Tigers win at the No. 2 position. Dropping just one game to Rodriguez, Goehl grabbed her sixth win in eight matches in a 6-1, 6-0 decision.

The other Tigers who gave up only one game against opponents were Fisher and junior Olga Gumenyuk (Kiev, Ukraine).

Pacific heads into the second of its six straight home games on April 3 where they face off against Portland at 10:30 a.m.
