Pacific Men's Volleyball: Tigers Sweep the Highlanders, 3-0
The game scores for the match were: 3-10, 32-30, and 30-18.
"It is a good win," said Head Coach Joe Wortmann. "It feels good to be successful. You are going to be successful if you sideout 90 percent of the time."
The Tigers did indeed sideout 89 percent of the time in the first and third game.
With Pacific leading 6-5 in the first game, a three point rally jumped their lead to four points at 9-5. Sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) had a kill and a service ace, and freshman Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) racked a kill for the Tigers during the run.
Later in the game at 16-12, the Tigers rallied five points, including another service ace and kill by Daley to take the score to 21-12. At 27-17, Pacific took advantage of two Highlander errors to put them one point away from the game. A block by Daley and senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) finished the game, as the Pacific topped NJIT 30-18.
The Tigers battled with NJIT in the second game through 14 tie scores and five lead changes. Trailing 9-7, three straight points for the Tigers gave them their first lead of the game at 10-9. Vukicevic registered a kill during the run.
Highlanders recaptured a lead, but the Tigers again took it away with another three point rally to take the score to 19-17. Sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) had a kill and aced the Highlander defense to help boost the Tiger run.
A four point rally early in the third game would put the Tigers in front 5-1. Pacific added three more to their score at 11-8, with kills from freshman Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.), Gornik, and Daley, to take a 14-8 lead. The Tigers started a five point rally at 20-13, with two kills from Vukicevic to jump their lead to 25-13. Senior Kevin Downing (Poipu, Hawaii) would also rack a kill during the run. Daley would rack a kill from the middle to give Pacific a 30-18 win and a match victory of 3-0.
Vukicevic recorded 12 kills for the Tigers, while Christian Puszies racked 18 kills for the Highlanders.
The Tigers will be back on the court to take on New Jersey Institute of Technology for their second match-up at 7:00pm in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
