Pacific Men's Volleyball: Tigers Fall Short in Dual to No. 6 Long Beach State, 3-1

The Pacific men's volleyball team dropped a four game decision to No. 6 Long Beach State, 3-1 on Friday, March 5. Pacific fell to 6-13 on the year and 0-13 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), while the 49ers improved to 9-6 and 7-4 in the MPSF.

The game scores for the match were: 31-33, 30-25, 30-23, and 30-26.

Pacific and Long Beach remained tight through the beginning of the first game. With the Tigers leading 21-20, a four point run for the 49ers pushed them to a 24-21 lead. Trailing at 27-24, Pacific rallied three to knot the game at 27-27. Two kills from sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) helped boost the Tigers. At 28-28, sophomores Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) and Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii) combined for a block to bring the score to 29-28. The Tigers couldn't record the game point on the next play, but a Long Beach service error brought the Tigers again within one of the win at 30-29. Two straight kills by the 49ers pushed them in front 31-30. Pacific battled back to score three straight points, capturing the game, 33-31.

Pacific had a 7-6 lead in the second game, when the 49ers rallied six straight points to jump out in front 12-7. Trialing 19-15, Pacific moved within one of Long Beach, scoring three straight to take the score to 19-18. Freshman Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and a block by Vukicevic and freshman Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) helped rally the Tigers. Moments later with the score tied 21-21, the 49ers took a 24-21 lead with a three point run. With Long Beach still leading at 27-25, they scored the final three points, to take the game, 30-25.

Long Beach took an early 12-7 lead over the Tigers, with a four point rally starting at 9-7. Pacific answered back by scoring three points to bring the score to 12-10. Schenk registered a kill and senior Kevin Downing (Poipu, Hawaii) aced the 49er defense during the rally. Later in the set, with Pacific down 24-20, Long Beach took a seven point lead scoring three straight, taking the score to 27-20. Pacific added two to their score at 27-20, with a kill from Gornik and a Long Beach error, bringing the score to 27-22. The 49ers would close out the game, 30-23.

The Tigers let an 8-6 lead slip away in the fourth game, as the 49ers pushed ahead with six straight points, bringing the score to 11-9. Later in the set, with the Tigers still trailing 20-15, Pacific scored three straight points, making the score 20-18. The Tigers scored two at 27-22, on a kill from Hughes and an error by Long Beach, moving within three at 27-24. At 29-25, a 49er game point, Hughes racked another kill to make the score 29-26. Long Beach would rally the final point of the game, with a 30-26 win to take the match 3-1.

The two teams combined for 46 service errors during the match.

Pacific was led by Gornik, who had a match- high of 16 kills.

Dan Alexander posted 14 kills for the 49ers.

"We battled hard against another top team," said Head Coach Joe Wortmann.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, March 6 to take on UC San Diego for an 8:00pm start time.
