    Mar 26, 2010
The Pacific men's volleyball team was defeated by No. 9 Long Beach State on Friday, March 26 by a score of 3-0. With the loss the Tigers dropped to 8-15 on the season and 0-15 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The 49ers improved to 12-10 on the year and 8-7 in the MPSF.

The game scores for the match were: 30-22, 30-22, and 30-21.

In the beginning of the first game, the teams battled back and fourth. Knotted 10-10, a service error by Long Beach followed by a block by freshman Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) put the Tigers in front 12-10. This lead would be short-lived as the 49ers would rally back. Even again at 15-15, Long Beach had a three point run to jump them out to an 18-15 lead. This would be added to at 20-17, when Long Beach rallied three more points to take a 23-17 lead over Pacific. The Tigers could not stop Long Beach, who took the game 30-22.

Long Beach outscored the Tigers 8-3 in the first 11 points of the second game. Leading the Tigers 14-11, the 49ers rallied five straight to boost their lead to eight at 19-11. At 21-13, the Tigers pushed a three point run with two kills from sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) and one from sophomore Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii), to take the score to 21-16. Pacific rallied another three points at 27-16 on two Long Beach errors and a service ace by Gornik to make the score 27-19. But Pacific would not be able to get any more runs started and dropped the game 30-22.

The Tigers fought hard to be within two of Long Beach at 14-12. But the 49ers pushed out to a seven point lead with a five point rally to bring the score to 19-12. Pacific was unable to find their rhythm to battle back, as Long Beach took the game 30-21 and the match 3-0.

Gornik posted 10 kills for the Tigers, while Schenk had eight in his two games of play. Senior Mark Bauhs (Danville, Calif.) had seven digs for Pacific.

Long Beach was led by Jim Baughman, who had a match-high of 14 kills.

The Tigers will be back in action in San Diego to take on UC San Diego on Saturday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m.
