    Pacific Men's Volleyball: Pacific Closes Out Weekend with 3-0 Loss to No. 14 UC San Diego

    The Pacific men's volleyball team fell to No. 14 UC San Diego, 3-0, on Saturday, March 27. With the loss the Tigers dropped to 8-16 on the year and 0-16 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Tritons improved to 8-15 on the season and 4-12 in the MPSF.

    The game scores for the match were: 30-20, 30-28, and 30-17.

    Even at seven in the first game, UC San Diego took a 10-7 lead over the Tigers with three straight points. At 15-11 the Tritons pushed ahead even further, rallying six to go ahead 21-11. Pacific scored two at 27-16 to bring the score to 27-18, with a kill from freshman Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) and a block by freshman Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia). Hughes racked a kill at 29-19 to record the final point for the Tigers, as they dropped the game 30-20.

    The Tigers took an early 5-2 lead, with a three point run, with kills from Hughes, senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.), and by freshman Christian Ahlin (Winnetka, Ill.). Ahead 21-20, Pacific increased their lead to three with another kill by Ahlin and a Triton attack error. But UC San Diego would follow up with three straight of their own, knotting the game at 23-23. Pacific's one point lead at 24-23 was quickly taken away, as UC San Diego rallied three points to take a 26-24 lead over the Tigers. Trailing 28-25, the Tigers came within one again at 28-27. At 29-27, Hughes racked another kill for the Tigers but it would not be enough as the Tritons would take the game 30-28.

    Pacific was trailing UC San Diego by one at 13-12, when they pushed ahead by five with a four point run to take the score to 17-12. The Tigers could not stop the Tritons, who gained a ten point lead at 24-14 with a six point rally starting at 18-14. At 26-16 Hughes registered his 14th kill of the match to take the score to 26-17. But four straight points in favor of the Tritons would close out the game 30-17 and the match 3-0.

    Freshman Patrick Tunnell (Tucson, Ariz.) had 36 assists for the Tigers. Hughes had 14 kills and sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) recorded 10.

    Leading the Tritons was Frank Fritsch, registering a match-high 15 kills.

    Pacific will be back on the court on Friday, April 2, to take on host UC Santa Barbara for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
