Pacific Men's Volleyball: Tigers Fall to No. 14 UC San Diego, 3-1

The men's volleyball team was defeated by UC San Diego by a score of 3-1. With the loss Pacific fell to 6-14 on the season and 0-14 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Tritons improved to 5-13 on the year and 2-11 in the MPSF.

The game scores for the match were: 31-29, 30-17, 33-35, and 30-24.

With the Tigers trailing 22-20 in the first game, Pacific rallied three straight to take a 23-22 lead over the Tritons. Freshman Nikola Vukicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) each racked a kill for the Tigers during the run. Tied at 27-27, a kill from sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) followed by a Triton error put the Tigers in front 29-27. UC San Diego answered back by scored four straight to finish the game, 31-29.

Down by three at 16-13 in the second game, the Tritons rallied four to increase their lead to seven at 20-13. At 23-15, Vukicevic successfully attacked to make the score 23-16. UC San Diego finished off the game, outscoring the Tigers 8-2, as they won, 30-17.

In the third game Pacific jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, with a seven point run, including two kills from Daley and two service aces from senior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.). The Tritons fought their way back into the game and with the Tigers down 30-29, Gornik racked a kill to knot the game at 30-30. UC San Diego would sideout, but another vital kill from Gornik brought the score to 31-31. At 33-32, Pacific rallied three straight to take the game 35-33. Freshman Taylor Hughes registered a kill and a service ace by sophomore Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii) finished the set for the Tigers.

Tritons had a 13-10 lead over the Tigers in fourth game, when Pacific scored two to cut the UC San Diego lead to one at 13-12. Even at 16-16, the Tritons rallied four to take a 20-16 lead over the Tigers. At 24-21, two kills from Gornik helped narrow the gap once again at 24-23. But UC San Diego scored the next five points to go ahead 29-23. The Tritons would close out the game, 30-24, and the match, 3-1.

Gornik led the Tigers with a match-high 23 kills, while Hughes posted 18.

Frank Fritsch had 19 kills for UC San Diego.

"We will get there. We are young and learning a lot," said Gornik.

The Tigers will be back on the court on at 7:00pm on Friday, March 19 to take on New Jersey Institute of Technology at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
