Women's Water Polo: No. 16 Pacific Cruises Past Cal Lutheran, Defeats Regals 14-3
To start the game the Tigers took the 1-0 lead at the 4:14 point when junior Catherine Collett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was able to find the back of the net. The Regals tied the game at one goal apiece with 2:04 on the clock, but Pacific responded with goals from Collett and sophomore Allison Kosich (Stockton, Calif.) at the 1:53 and 1:11 points to make it a 3-1 game.
The Tiger offense kept its momentum going in the second quarter notching five goals while the defense held the Cal Lutheran offense scoreless, with freshman Brooke Millar(Auckland, New Zealand) picking up five saves in the cage. Contributing the Pacific's scoring attack in the quarter to put the Tigers up 8-1were freshman Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand), sophomore Katherine Biehle (Visalia, Calif.), juniors Bethany Quertermous(Humble, Texas) and Mandy King (Benicia, Calif.). During the quarter Quertermous notched goals at the 5:08 and 1:28 points.
In the third quarter Myles and juniors Bridget Geck (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Meara McCarthy (Simsbury, Conn.) scored goals at the 6:27, 5:25 and 4:32 points correspondingly. For the second consecutive quarter Pacific's defense held the Regals scoreless.
In the final frame Pacific extended its lead to 11 on a goal from junior Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawai'i) but Cal Lutheran responded 25 seconds later making it a 12-2 contest. Pacific took the 14-2 lead when Tawarahara notched her second goal with 2:52 on the clock and was followed with a goal from Geck 52 seconds later. The Regals were able to notch its last goal of the contest with 1:41 left in regulation but the Tigers were able to come away with the 14-3 victory.
Pacific was led by freshman Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand) and juniors Bridget Geck (Huntington Beach, Calif.),Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and Catherine Collett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) who scored three goals apiece for the Tigers. Freshman Brooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) recorded 10 saves in the cage for Pacific through four quarters. "Today's game was a great team effort with everyone contributing to the win," said Head Coach Megan Thomson. "Brooke had a great game in goal."
The Tigers return to action Saturday, March 13 in Fresno, Calif., against Fresno-Pacific and Concordia.
