Women's Waterpolo: No. 16 Pacific Finishes Day One of Cal Lutheran Spring Classic Undefeated
The Tigers opened the first quarter with back-to-back goals from juniors Dara Tawarahara(Honolulu, Hawai'i) and Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) to the an early 2-0 lead. The Seahawks cut Pacific's lead to one at the 3:54 mark but the Tigers countered 16 seconds later with a goal from sophomore Allison Kosich (Stockton, Calif.). Pacific increased its lead to five on goals from Quertermous and freshman Jasmine Myles (Auckland, New Zealand) at the 2:10 and :01 points respectively.
At the start of the second quarter Kosich and sophomore Katherine Biehle (Visalia, Calif.) quickly put the Tigers up by six, finding the back of the net at the 7:05 and 6:21 points. Pacific then expanded its lead to eight on back-to-back goals from Tawarahara and sophomore Brittany Lloyd (Orinda, Calif.). Wagner tallied its second goal of the contest with 2:05 remaining in the half to make it a 9-2 game. Freshman Brooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) had four saves in the quarter.
Junior Mandy King (Benicia, Calif.) found the back of the net at the start of the third quarter with 5:57 on the clock, putting Pacific up by eight. Wagner then responded with goals at the 5:30 and 4:59 points to make it a score of 10-4. The Tigers gained a nine point lead when King scored back-to-back goals at the 4:04 and 3:07 marks and Tawarahara notched a goal at the 1:52 point. The Seahawks end the quarter making it a 13-5 game, scoring a goal with 0:45 left on the clock.
In the final frame junior Courtney Boettger (Stockton, Calif.) scored Pacific's lone goal at the 5:55 spot to put Pacific up 14-6. Wagner notched five straight goals in the quarter for a final score of 14-11. Junior Kailee Bucknum (Mission Viejo, Calif.) ended the second quarter with two saves in the cage.
Pacific was led by juniors Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and Mandy King (Benicia, Calif.) who notched three goals apiece in the contest. Freshman Brooke Millar (Auckland, New Zealand) recorded five saves in the cage for Pacific in the first half, while junior Kailee Bucknum (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had five saves in the second half.
With the win the Tigers set a new program record for most wins in a season with 12. "To come away with our 12th win of the season and the most ever in a season for this program is awesome," said head coach Megan Thomson on the Tigers victory. "Tonight provided good learning experience for us as we move on with the season. I am proud of these girls for where we are at right now and expect us to keep getting better starting in our game tomorrow morning against Whittier."
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, March 7 at 9:45 a.m. against Whittier.
