GRAMMY Foundation teams with Pacific for the Brubeck Collection
The $5000 grant will support a preservation assessment of the Brubeck Collection at the University of the Pacific Library's Holt-Atherton Special Collections Department. The project will consist of determining which audio and video recordings are most endangered and in need of preservation treatment such as digitization, and developing a plan for implementing the proposed preservation measures. It will start this summer.
"The GRAMMY Foundation funding will ensure the unparalleled audio and video documentation of Brubeck's monumental contributions to the development of jazz and other musical genres will be preserved for future generations." said Shan Sutton, Associate Dean and Head of Holt-Atherton Special Collections. "Many of the recordings have never been released to the public, making their preservation even more important as there are probably few to no other copies of these works in other collections."
The Brubeck Collection at Pacific consists of a broad range of materials documenting the jazz icon's career. In addition to business records, correspondence, concert programs, concert reviews, and musical scores, the collection contains music from rehearsals, jam sessions and audio recordings from the 1940's to the present, , including numerous interviews with Dave Brubeck as well as rare trio and solo recordings. The collection is open to the public and actively promoted through traveling exhibits and other outreach initiatives.
