    Pacific Men's Waterpolo: Fourth Quarter Goals Pushes No. 1 California Past No. 6 Pacific, Tigers Defeated, 10-8

    In the final game of the 2010 season at Chris Kjeldsen Pool, Pacific's men's water polo team fell to No. 1 California, 10-8. With the loss the Tigers fell 14-9 (2-4 MPSF) while the Bears improved to 19-2 (7-0 MPSF).

    In a highly physical contest, Pacific took the 1-0 lead on a goal from sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) at the 5:35 mark. However California's Ivan Rackov tied the game at one all on a five-meter following the counter attack at the 5:25 point. The Tigers continued to battle the Bears when Tomasevic notched his second goal of the quarter at the 4:02 mark to put Pacific up 2-1. Pacific held on to the lead for nearly two minutes when Cal's Cory Nasoff found the back of the net at the 3:02 spot to tie the game at 2-2. The Bears then took their first lead of the day when Luka Saponjic and Cory Nasoff scored back-to-back goals at the 3:02 and 2:22 points respectively to make it a 4-2 game. After being held scoreless since the 4:02 point, Pacific's Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) found the back of the net with :22 remaining on the clock to put the Tigers within one of the Bears.

    With the second quarter underway, the Tiger defense prevented California from finding the back of the net until the 5:53 mark when Ivan Rackov tallied his lone goal of the contest to give California the two goal advantage. With the Tigers trailing by two, junior Tyler Reardon(Oak Park, Calif.) scored a goal on the counter attack at the 5:23 spot to make it a 5-4 game. California then regained the two goal lead 14 seconds later on a goal from Colin Smith. Senior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) scored a goal with 4:17 remaining in the half to cut Cal's lead to one but the Bears responded with a goal 56 seconds later to take the 7-5 lead. Senior Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) ended a quarter, scoring his first goal of the contest at the 2:15 point to make it a 7-6 game.

    The Tigers kicked off the second half with a strong defensive third quarter. Frehsman Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) recorded three saves for the Tigers and helped Pacific hold the Bears scoreless for eight minutes. Pacific's offense tallied two goals in the quarter to give the Tigers their third lead of the contest. Freshman Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) tied the game at 7-7 when he scored at the 7:03 mark. Pacific then took the 8-7 lead on Delong's second goal of the contest with 4:55 remaining in the quarter.

    In the final frame Pacific held the Bears scoreless until 4:01 spot when Cal's Brian Dudley tied the game at 8-8. The Bears closed out the game tallying additional goals at the 2:18 and 1:31 marks for a 10-8 final score.

    Pacific was led by sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) and senior Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) who scored two goals apiece. Freshman Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) recorded nine saves in the cage for Pacific.

    The Tigers continue action on Sunday, November 14 in Stanford, Calif., against the Cardinal at noon.
