Pacific Women's Volleyball: Engelhardt Leads Three Tigers On To The All-Big West Team

    Nov 23, 2010

With the announcement of the All-Big West volleyball teams on Tuesday, November 23, the Pacific women's volleyball team placed three Tigers on the all-conference teams. Senior Svenja Engelhardt led the way for the Tigers as she earned her second straight All-Big West First Team nod while junior Samantha Misa and freshman Jennifer Sanders were named to the honorable mention and all-freshman teams, respectively.

Pacific's No. 1 weapon throughout the season, Engelhardt proved to be among the nation's best on the outside as the senior put together one of the most prolific seasons in program history. With one match left to play in the 2010 regular season, Engelhardt has produced a career-high 494 kills on the year, a mark which ranks No. 9 on Pacific's all-time single-season kills list. Additionally, the senior needs just six kills the Tigers' season finale to become just the seventh individual in program history to produce 500 kills in a single season. For the year, Engelhardt has ranked No. 1 in the Big West in kills and kills per game as she has averaged 4.41 kills, a total which ranks No. 14 among the nation's best attackers. Defensively, Engelhardt has produced 14 double-doubles on the season while posting a career-high 288 digs. In her final season of action, Engelhardt put together some of her finest matches of her four-year career, posting a career-best 28 kills against Long Beach State on October 9 while picking up 21 digs against UC Santa Barbara on November 13. On October 25, Engelhardt earned her first-career Big West Player of the Week award after leading the Tigers to a pair of dominant victories over San Jose State and UC Riverside.

Playing alongside of Engelhardt on the outside throughout her first season as a Tiger, Misa proved to be a dominant force at the pins for Pacific on her way to her first all-conference award. For the year, Misa tallied 319 kills while averaging 2.85 kills per game, second-best among Pacific attackers. In addition, Misa has posted 288 digs while also tallying nine double-doubles on the year. Heading into the Tigers' final match of the season Misa had posted 355.5 points, second best among the Tigers. Growing as the season progressed, Misa completed conference play with arguably her finest offensive matches of the year as the junior posted a career-best 24 kills to lead Pacific past UC Santa Barbara on November 13 before following with her second straight 20+ kill performance with 22 kills against UC Davis in the Tigers' Big West finale.

Making her mark in just her first season of collegiate volleyball, Sanders played her way onto the conference's all-freshman team with a solid season in the middle of Pacific's attack. Entering the final match of the regular season, Sanders had posted 249 kills, third-best on the team, after averaging 2.22 kills per game. Most recently, Sanders prowess in the middle showed with career-efforts at the net as the freshman tallied 37 kills in her final two conference matches including a 22 kills effort against UC Santa Barbara on November 13. Defensively, the freshman posted 75 blocks in her first campaign, second best among Pacific blockers. Entering the weekend, Sanders has posted 291.0 points, third most among the Tigers.

Pacific's and its all-conference honorees will be back in action on Saturday, November 27, when the Tigers close out the 2010 regular season at Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. The non-conference showdown is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
