    Pacific Men's Water Polo: No. 7 Pacific Dominates No. 11 Santa Clara, 14-7

    In the first of two home games scheduled for the weekend, Pacific's men's water polo team defeated No. 11 Santa Clara, 14-7. With the win the Tigers improved to 13-8 (1-3 MPSF) on the year while the Broncos fell to 17-11 (7-5 WWPA) on the season.

    Pacific took an early 1-0 lead when Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) found the back to the net the 7:16 mark. Sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) then extended the Tigers to three when he tallied back-to-back goals at the 6:46 and 5:43 spots to make it a 3-0 game. The Broncos responded on the counter attack with a goal at the 5:24 mark to cut Pacific's lead to two. However, the Tigers then extend their lead to four when senior Joey Gullikson(Sonoma, Calif.) and junior Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.) scored goals on passes fromT.J. Friedman (Fairfield, Calif.) at the 2:30 and 1:56 spots respectively to make it a 5-1 game.

    At the start of the second quarter sophomore Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) put the Tigers up 6-1 when he found the back of the net at the 6:54 point. The Tigers then gained the six point advantage when Tomasevic completed the hat trick at the 4:10 point; however the Broncos cut Pacific's lead to five when Daley Meistrell converted a five-meter shot. The Tigers closed out the quarter taking the 8-2 lead with Tomasevic's fourth goal of the contest.

    Tomasevic then gave Pacific a seven point advantage at the start of the third quarter when he notched his fifth goal of the day at the 4:51 mark; however Santa Clara countered at the 2:17 spot with a goal from Steven Hobbs to make it a 9-3 game. With 1:53 remaining on the clock junior Jasper Visser(Soest, Utrecht, Netherlands) found the back of the next to extend Pacific's lead to seven.


    In the final frame Santa Clara kicked off the quarter with a goal at the 6:29 mark to come within six of the Tigers but Erdelyi found the back of the net on the counter attack 16 seconds later. Visser then put Pacific up 13-4 when he completed the hat trick on consecutive goals at the 5:35 and 3:34 marks. With 2:22 remaining in regulation Tucker Carlson of Santa Clara notched a goal to cut the Tiger lead to eight, but junior Daniel Lungu(Netanya, Israel) scored his first goal of the contest 29 seconds later to put the Tigers up 14-5. Santa Clara closed out the contest with two goals from Carlson at the 1:12 and :36 marks for a 14-7 final score.

    Pacific was led by Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) who scored five goals while Jasper Visser (Soest, Utrecht, Netherlands) tallied three goals. Freshman Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) finished the day with 15 saves in the cage.

    The Tigers continue action on Sunday, November 7 when they host No. 6 UC Santa Barbara at 12 pm.
